Marie? And pronunciation

cornflowery · 04/04/2018 15:06

Marie is top of my our list. It's a name that appears in all sides of our families- despite them being from different parts of Europe - which I think is lovely. And I love the name too.
Anyway, DD due any day now. DH said last night that people will pronounce it just like the word "Marry" - which I don't particularly like.

People sometimes mispronounce, or rather just put emphasis on a different part / vowel of my DS name. It doesn't actually bother me too much. But we use a shortened version of his name (which everyone knows how to say) quite a lot - and we can't really do much shortening with the name Marie.

We are thinking of Marie Eloise Lastname, so opinions on that would be nice too.

I know a Mhairi who only ever gets called Var-ee by everyone and she would be very cross if you said it any other way.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/04/2018 15:57

How about Elmarie Louise, it has a nice ring to it.
No confusion there !

DonkeyOil · 04/04/2018 15:59

I knew someone would bring that up Donkey

Sorry, Jessie! Grin Interesting about the difference in the vocative case, though. How complicated!

I’m in NI and have only heard it pronounced ma-ree except when it’s Marie-Rose then it’s Marry-Rose.

What about Marie-Claire? Grin

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/04/2018 16:02

I think some ppl say Mare-ee because of Marie Claire magazine.

I think you will get ppl who say it differently-my DD has a name which often appears on MN lists of names ppl potentially like but would never name their child and it has 2 different pronunciations, but same spelling.
Her name is the English pronunciation, not the French one but ppl occasionally pronounce the other way.
It's fine-I wouldn't not use a name cause of this.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/04/2018 16:03

*because of this Hmm

Thistlebelle · 04/04/2018 16:04

I wouldn’t call the magazine Maree- Claire.

I’d call it Marry-Claire.

willisurvive3under2 · 04/04/2018 16:07

Family from Ireland/NW England pronounce it as Marry. I find it very confusing!

HoratioNightboy · 04/04/2018 16:07

Jessie, Mhairi is spelled that way in the vocative, genitive and dative cases, and is pronounced Varry. It's spelled Mairi and pronounced Marry in all other situations though. Most Gaelic speakers don't accept Mhairi as a name, as it's just a form of Mairi.

The people who include the 'h' either tend to want to make it look more Gaelic (It's been added to "Mhorag" bysome people as well) but keep the pronunciation as "marry, or want it pronouced Varry, and get mad when people say Marry. You never know which is which until you get it wrong!

JessieMcJessie · 04/04/2018 16:07

Sure, PuppyMonkey however the MP Mhairi Black pronounces her own name with an “M”. Regardless of the Gaelic origins it’s one where there are now two accepted pronounciations. (Sorry for derail OP).

JessieMcJessie · 04/04/2018 16:09

Cross posted Horatio thanks for the explanation, which confirms what I thought.

madamedepoppadom · 04/04/2018 16:09

I pronounced it MaREE unless it's part of a hyphenated French name. You might also find older people want to pronounce it MARie (rhymes with starry)

You're right that there aren't really any short forms (Maz??) but some languages have longer pet forms for versions of Marie/Maria - Marisia (pronounced marisha), Marusja, Marieke (maREEka)? For Marie Eloise (nice combo by the way), maybe a nn like Marise or Marlise?

JessieMcJessie · 04/04/2018 16:13

My friend Marie-Claire doesn’t like people to say Ma-ree Claire. She’s Marry-Claire. (She’s English too, no French family at all). But I just asked her and she herself would call a stand-alone Marie Ma-ree!

cornflowery · 04/04/2018 16:54

Thanks everyone.
Happy for the Mhairi / Mairi derail - my dad is Irish and a few of the Maries in the family tree on that side may have actually been Mhairis or Mairis!
We have Lots of other variants of the name in the family tree which is what I like about it. On my mums side there were so many Maries that they all had to have different pronunciations to tell them apart (all the Maries in all sides of the family are now dead - so I won't be adding to the confusion).

I say ma-ree

Marry to me has always been spelt mhairi

Thistlebelle · 04/04/2018 18:06

It’s a lovely name however you pronounce it Corn.

violet0805 · 04/04/2018 18:30

Have you considered Maria?

TroubledLichen · 04/04/2018 18:34

Sorry I probably would pronounce Marie as Marry... but only because I’m part French so have more than a few (older) relatives that are Marie-Something. I imagine most people in the UK would say Ma-Ree (or some variant of) though, unsure about the NI accent though!

Apple23 · 04/04/2018 18:52

Have you considered Maria?

I don't think that will help. There are at least 3 ways to pronounce Maria...
Mah-ree-a
Mah-rye-a
Marr-Ree-ya

Both lovely names though.

If they hear the name first, people will pronounce it how you tell them (and spell it how they want think). If they read the name first, they will guess the pronunciation.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/04/2018 19:06

I like Marie-Claire pronounced Marry. Hate Marie which to me is on a par with Janet, Angela, Karen, Linda.

GuntyMcGee · 04/04/2018 19:20

It's essentially Maria without the A, so pronounced 'ma-ree' or 'muh-ree'.

teenagedirtbagbaby · 04/04/2018 19:26

Yeah I would pronounce it marry because mar-ee is more outdated

TheCraicDealer · 04/04/2018 19:26

I'm from NI and say Ma-ree. Don't hear Marry too much but I'm in Belfast. Probably more common when it's doubled barrelled and the names roll into one.

What's super confusing is people being called Mary but said as "Meery". My Granda used to say it like that, I was all "wtf" even as a child. Sounds so much like sneer to me.

I'd go with Marianne, no one will get that wrong Grin

thecuckoosnest · 04/04/2018 19:32

Never mind Marie, how do you pronounce Eloise?!

TheCraicDealer · 04/04/2018 19:35

Now we've got to the important questions. Never got that one either for definite.

El-loyse?

Probably not.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 04/04/2018 19:37

I prounounce it Elle-Louise. No idea if that’s right though!
