Lawrence or Arthur

Hi, we have named our ds2 Lawrence Arthur which I really am happy with, but am unsure whether to have him known as Lawrence or Arthur. We’ve been calling him Lawrence but can’t shorten to Lawrie as we already have a ds1 named Ollie. Which name do you think is the nicer or the two: Lawrence or Arthur. He is 7 weeks old at the moment so still time to change. Just really hope he doesn’t get shortened to Loz at school! Really want him to have a name he will love

Arthur.

FeatheredTail · 02/04/2018 08:22

Lawrence, by a long shot.

Kat8019 · 02/04/2018 08:56

Thanks Sugarpiehoneyeye and FeatheredTail. So tricky naming a little one! I’m driving myself a bit barmy at the moment with my indecisiveness!

Lawrence, although if you don't go with Lawrie as a nickname you might end up with 'Loll' like one of dh's friends. I love all the Arthurian legends but if friends at school etc. shorten it to Arf or Artie (with its inevitable rhyming epithet) it would be quite annoying.
Congratulations on your DS!

My son is called Lawrence and he's always been very insistent we use his full name. He has an unrelated nick name that we use for him.

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 02/04/2018 09:33

Definitely Lawrence. There are loads of little Arthurs (grandad chic) around.
Arthur could get shortened to Artie anyway, so no much difference between Artie and Lawrie, in terms of similarity with Ollie.

KirstenRaymonde · 02/04/2018 09:34

I know three Lawrence’s, all known as Lawrence. Arthur is extremely popular at the moment, if that matters to you.

daisypond · 02/04/2018 09:39

I prefer Lawrence. You could go with Larry as a nickname - very The Durrells, and just ahead/on the curve for naming fashions, I'd say.

thenightsky · 02/04/2018 09:48

My DS is Lawrence. He is known as Lawrence to everyone apart from me, DH and his sister, who call him Lol.

Even from being little, when someone asked him what his name was, he would always say 'Lawrence with a W not a U.

Muddlingalongalone · 02/04/2018 09:51

Lawrence definitely. Much nicer imo.
The Lawrence I grew up with was always known by his full name.

MinaPaws · 02/04/2018 09:54

I love Arthur.

ChocolateCrunch · 02/04/2018 10:12

Prefer Arthur tbh

applecatchers36 · 02/04/2018 10:14

Prefer Lawrence but both great names

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 02/04/2018 10:17

I like both. But living in an area where 'th' is pronounced 'f' rather frequently I'd probably go for Lawrence.

PintOfCalpol · 02/04/2018 10:20

Arthur and ollie go nicely
Ollie and Lawrence don’t

Overall I think Arthur is a nicer name.

gillybeanz · 02/04/2018 10:24

Arthur, it can be shortened to Art if he doesn't like Arthur.
lawrence is just an awful name, and lawrie is a girls name, he'll get the piss taken out of him, unless of course he'll attend a public school.

yikesanotherbooboo · 02/04/2018 10:31

I love Lawrence and don't see why you can't call him Lawrence on a day to day basis. When he goes to school he can be called Larry or Lawrie ( no need for Loll) and Olly night choose a nickname.
I like Arthur but hate the usual nicknames so if he were mine I would stick to the long version anyway.

ReinettePompadour · 02/04/2018 10:36

Lawrence.

Mines Laurence and gets called Laurie. I can't imagine that would be used spelling it with a 'w' though, its a bit odd saying 'Lawrie'.

Sophronia · 02/04/2018 11:39

Lawrence. I don’t think Ollie and Lawrie sound too similar.

RosieCotton · 02/04/2018 12:42

I prefer Lawrence but i do know 4 (all grown men now) and 3 of them go by Loz

Kat8019 · 02/04/2018 14:45

Thanks all for your opinions. I think we’ll stick with Lawrence. But of a long shot but I might use the nickname Rory. It came up on nameberry as a nm for Lawrence and it means Red King. Currently Lawrence is a little red haired so Rory as a nickname is perfect. I do love the name Arthur but feel Lawrence (although maybe a love it or hate it name) is probably a little more unique.

Arthur

chezmk1988 · 02/04/2018 22:51

Lawrence could be wren?

Belindabauer · 02/04/2018 23:29

Definitely prefer Lawrence.

Ikeameatballs · 02/04/2018 23:33

I really like them both but think that Rory doesn't really work naturally as a nn. It just sounds like a totally different, perfectly nice, name.
