Aoife Elizabeth/Aoife Betty?

HolyShmoly · 27/03/2018 22:55

I think we're fairly set on Aoife as a first name, but haven't discussed a middle name. DH has called bump 'Betty' all along so I think it would be fun to use this as her middle name. We have a one syllable, common surname.
Do you think Betty works as a middle name? I figure Elizabeth sounds a bit better, but obviously loses a bit of the original meaning.

Ah boo, I missed the deleted post. Yeah, we're in England so I'm expecting a few comments, but I think it's straightforward enough that if anyone makes a
deal about not being able to pronounce a two syllable name then it says a lot about them.
My other favourite name is Sadhbh but I thought it would cause her too much hassle.

dont go for Aofie. At school they will make fun of her as it is close to Adolfie. (as in Adolf Hitler) sorry...

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/03/2018 17:03

Please ignore that post ^^ - that is so unlikely to happen, as to be laughable!

😂

kedy · 28/03/2018 17:05

dont go for Aofie. it sounds too close to a famous german dictator, they can make fun of her at school.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 28/03/2018 17:07

What a ridiculous post 😆

purplecorkheart · 28/03/2018 17:08

Aoife Elizabetu

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 28/03/2018 17:12

Definitely Aoife Elizabeth (or Aoife Eilis).

I love Betty as a pet name for Elizabeth, but would not have it as a legal name (first or middle).

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/03/2018 17:21

Kedy - as you're not spelling the name correctly, I wonder if you even know how to pronounce it?!

It sounds about as similar to Adolf, as, say, Anna does. 😅

duffaho · 28/03/2018 17:28

How do your name choices sound when you say then altogether . As in ;
Aoife Elizabeth Jones get down these stairs at once

Or Aoife Betty Smith - I want a word with you.

I prefer Elizabeth myself because if she wants to use that she opens up a lot of other possible names-and Betty is just one of them.

HolyShmoly · 28/03/2018 17:36

My sensible head says Aoife Elizabeth does give her loads of options later in life if she ever thinks she can ditch her Irish roots and survive my wrath. My soft heart says her Daddy talks to "Betty" every day.

My secret dictator heart hopes that she doesn't grow a weird square moustache and try to take over the world... should I take that "who run the world" print out of my shopping cart in case it gives her ideas? Grin

Honestly, Aoife sounds absolutely nothing like Adolph you amadán! But thanks for the laugh and unasked-for opinion!

duffaho · 28/03/2018 17:46

Daddy can ( and may well )still call her Betty no matter what name you give her.

My own Irish Dad called all of us by names he bestowed upon us and none of them resembling our given names at all.Wink

HolyShmoly · 28/03/2018 17:51

That's a good point Duffaho, my own did the same - we can continue the tradition!

Sarahlouaxox · 28/03/2018 18:01

I love Aoife Belle

myrtleWilson · 28/03/2018 18:05

How do Aoife Lilibet or Aoife Betsy sound?

grasspigeons · 28/03/2018 18:05

I'll start with I really like the name and I know a few -- but to a southerner it does sound a bit like you are saying

E for Elizabeth

So I prefer Aoife Betty

daisypond · 28/03/2018 18:09

Aoife Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a proper name and Betty, while cute and nice, just isn't - it's fine as a diminutive name, though.

harrietm87 · 28/03/2018 18:34

Love Aoife OP!

I think neither option is great though - I love Betty as a nickname but it seems too cute and informal as a middle name, so Elizabeth is better, but then you've got the "E for Elizabeth" thing. Can't you go with a different middle name and your DH can just keep calling her Betty?

dotdotdotmustdash · 28/03/2018 18:39

We called our bump Ichabod Skeletaur but we didn't go to name him that after birth.

I'd go with Elizabeth.

DramaAlpaca · 28/03/2018 18:43

Another vote for Aoife Elizabeth. It's lovely.

I don't like Betty, sorry.

HurtyAtThirty · 28/03/2018 18:46

Daisy pond makes a good point, Betty is a bit like giving someone the second name Boo (like a certain chef). It’s cute when they’re little but not so much in a professional environment.

Can I please have some of what Kedy is having?! Gosh mine can be a bit of a dictator sometimes, but until she grows a little moustache and starts saluting people that’s where the similarities end (god I hope she doesn’t grow a moustache!).

We’re thinking of another equally Irish name for DC2 (lots of girls names but trouble with boys names so far), I liked Conchobhar but my friends all threatened to disown me if I chose that LMAO!!

eloisesparkle · 28/03/2018 20:36

Hurly
Tarlach
Connal
Breifne

HolyShmoly · 28/03/2018 20:44

I LOVE Connal/Conall. If bump was a boy and I could silence DH's opinion this one would have been Conall.
Conchobar is nice but a bit out there for me.

If you want her dad to keep calling her Betty, name her Elizabeth Aoife and use Betty as the name she's known by. If you give it to her as a middle name, he's not going to use it anyway - and if you like it that much, why not use it? I know a couple of young Bettys. Or use Elizabeth as a middle name with Aoife first.

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/03/2018 20:51

But Betty would be a middle name. It doesn't matter if it's a diminutive - it won't impact her professional career, as she'd always be known as Aoife.

Not one of my colleagues knows my middle name. Confused Hell, many of my friends don't!

I'm the last person to urge someone to use a cutesy diminutive as a first name, but as I said up thread, the same rules just don't apply to middle names. If we were taking first names - I'd be saying Elizabeth.

But Elizabeth for the middle name seems contrived, given the the OP's DH has been calling the bump Betty. Not Elizabeth.

Onceuponatimethen · 28/03/2018 20:56

I love Aoife, Elizabeth and Betty BUT (sorry) I don’t like Aoife Elizabeth (e for elizabeth) of Aoife Betty (alphabetty) at all

A compromise might be to throw in another middle name which moves people are doing now...

Aoife Catherine Elizabeth
Aoife Mary Elizabeth
Aoife Ciara Betty

Or something else!
