Morven or Merryn?

Scottishgirl85 · 27/03/2018 17:06

Having a little girl in 4 weeks. I'm Scottish (although we live in SE England) and would love to use a Scottish name - Morven is currently the favourite. Another on our list is Merryn, which is a Cornish name with a lovely meaning (joyful), but we really want a Scottish connection. What's your gut reaction please, Morven or Merryn? Thanks!

Merryn

I love Merryn and would have used it but it doesn’t fit with our surname Sad. I find Morven quite harsh tbh

Meeep · 27/03/2018 17:13

Morven. Ignore those other people!

AntiqueOlive · 27/03/2018 17:14

Morven is lovely. I think its lovely and soft.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 27/03/2018 17:38

I think they're both lovely!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/03/2018 17:40

Merryn.

Merran is an old Scots form of Marion, if that would be an option for you. It was pronounced "Mairrin" back in its day, but would most likely have changed to pronunciation as spelled it it hadn't been overtaken by the English form of Marion.

I really like Morven though.

Please use Morven! It was our choice for a girl, but we had a boy; I'd be delighted if someone else used it- it's beautiful!

Naberes · 27/03/2018 18:00

I love both! Morven is nice and Scottish, and barely used. I think it’s a bit witchy, in a good way! Merryn is so sweet and happy sounding.

How about Mirren

ChocolateCrunch · 27/03/2018 18:03

I like them both, but Merryn is probably my favourite.

DuggeeHugs · 27/03/2018 18:08

Morven!

The only Merryn I know is a 50-something male accountant

Isadora2007 · 27/03/2018 18:13

I like Merran. The wife in braveheart is Murren but I'm not sure if it’s a crap pronunciation by Mel Gibson or an actual name...

LetsSplashMummy · 27/03/2018 18:16

I love Morven but I don't think I'd like how it's pronounced by a SE accent, so I'd go with Merryn (which is also lovely).

Moonflower12 · 27/03/2018 18:18

Morven. It's lovely. I know a lovely lady with this name.

autumnkate · 27/03/2018 18:20

Merryn x100000000

AnyaMoondial · 27/03/2018 18:20

Morven. It's just brilliant.

ReversingSnail · 27/03/2018 18:39

Merryn

Scottishgirl85 · 27/03/2018 19:06

Thanks for the replies so far! Seems merryn is slightly in the lead. I'm really pleased morven is generally getting a good reaction though as I really do love it.

I personally don’t like either. They just seem very dowdy, almost likes witches’ names (sorry).

But out of the two, Merryn is better.

Thistles24 · 27/03/2018 19:26

I love both, but I'd go for Morven. It's a beautiful, strong and timeless name. Merryn is lovely, but I think it's about to become really popular. I'm also in Scotland and have heard the name Mirren used for wee girls, if you want a Scottish connection.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 27/03/2018 19:30

Merryn is my favourite girls name even though I have two DDs neither of whom is called it!

ColinsVeryJolly · 27/03/2018 19:37

Merryn is on my list for if I ever have a girl. ignoring the fact DH has had a vasectomy

Situp · 27/03/2018 19:40

I would go Merryn purely because I am from the Midlands and Morven with a Brummie accent sounds like Marvin which I don't like at allWink
