Morven or Merryn?

Having a little girl in 4 weeks. I'm Scottish (although we live in SE England) and would love to use a Scottish name - Morven is currently the favourite. Another on our list is Merryn, which is a Cornish name with a lovely meaning (joyful), but we really want a Scottish connection. What's your gut reaction please, Morven or Merryn? Thanks!

It would depend how you pronounce Morven for me. I love the Welsh name Seren, but it is often mispronounced by English people, the en at the end should be like the en at the start of envelope, but in England people will usually replace the second e with a schwa and say something that sounds like Ser'n. I'm guessing you could have a similar problem with Morven depending on how it's pronounced.

I only know a male Morgan! He's in his 40's. I know a few Merryn's all female.

My vote is for Merryn

MikeWyzowski · 27/03/2018 19:45

Morven....not Morgan

HoratioNightboy · 27/03/2018 19:50

I like Merran. The wife in braveheart is Murren but I'm not sure if it’s a crap pronunciation by Mel Gibson or an actual name...

Murron is an actual name but it wasn't Wallace's wife name. She was a Marion/Merran/Marren, all pronounced Mairrin back then. Murron isn't connected with it, it's of a differnt origin.

Mirren is a yet another name that's also unconnected with Marren, Merran and Murron. It's easy to confuse them all!

Morven. Hands down.

MikeUniformMike · 27/03/2018 21:33

Morwen is nice. It's welsh and pronounced MORR-wen. (Morr as in morris and wen as in Wendy).
Morwenna is Cornish and nice too.
I like Morven and Merryn too.

YouCantBeSirius · 27/03/2018 23:31

I like Morven best

Sophronia · 27/03/2018 23:54

How about Mirren?

Mossend · 27/03/2018 23:55

Morven
How about Mirren, it's lovely too

Mossend · 27/03/2018 23:56

Crossposts Sophronia

putputput · 28/03/2018 07:06

Merryn, but then I'm biased as we have one. Have not had a single negative reaction to her name.
Morven is lovely too.

Holycrapwhatnow · 28/03/2018 07:14

Merryn is lovely!

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 28/03/2018 07:18

I love Merryn. Isn’t Mirren a Scottish name? What about that instead if you want to keep Scottish connections & I think it’s also lovely. Morven is quite nice too though.

Goosegrass · 28/03/2018 08:15

Morven is lovely.

Scottishgirl85 · 28/03/2018 08:40

Thank you everyone! It's pretty much 50:50! A family friend has a Mirren and the football connection puts me off a bit, but it is a nice name. Interesting comment about potential for Merryn to become popular, that's quite a big factor as DD1 has a very unusual name therefore we're keen for DD2 to be equally unusual.

I love Morven! It’s on my list... Go for it!

17caterpillars1mouse · 28/03/2018 15:27

Morven! I like Merryn but I love Morven. I would use it myself but it really doesn't work with our surname :(

Such a beautiful but underused name

1haudyerwheesht · 28/03/2018 15:47

Morven x 1000!!

daisypond · 28/03/2018 15:50

If you want a Scottish name, then of course go for Morven. Merryn is nice as well, but it's Cornish, so I wouldn't consider it.

haverhill · 28/03/2018 15:50

Merryn makes me think of merry. Morven makes me think of mourning and mournful. So Merryn.Smile

VeronicaLodge · 28/03/2018 15:54

Both nice. Merryn is sweeter whereas Morven has a bit more edge. I think I'd pick Morven.

autumnkate · 28/03/2018 17:30

I think you like Morven more OP so that’s what you should go for.

RyvitaBrevis · 28/03/2018 17:34

Morven!

chezmk1988 · 28/03/2018 22:44

Merryn. Morven is hideous sorry

harrietm87 · 28/03/2018 23:32

Morven! It sounds strong and cool to me, whereas Merryn is a bit more insipid.
