"Normal" but uncommon boys names

DC2 due end of July!

I feel like I've been through hundreds thousands of baby names and DP vetos every single one.

My first DC has a beautiful name, old fashioned but very much so a "normal" name in that there is no doubt as to how to spell or pronounce it. IDK if revealing her name would help name new DS?

The ONLY name we both sort of like is Arthur.

I like Rufus, Rupert, Alfred, Oscar (even though it seems to be becoming common), those sort of style names.

Please help us! I've made a thread before I think and had loads of lovely suggestions but guess what.... they all got veto'd!

Bear in mind my DP takes months to choose which new shirt to buy let alone name a child!

We have a Quentin - super cool but not wacky.

Rowan / Roan
Edgar
Eben
Owain
Griffin

My own DS has a lovely (imo obvs) uncommon name but I'm not sharing as I like that we never meet another.

All of the above were on my list.

I don't think there's much point fighting the name you like. Use Arthur. It's not that likely there will be more than one other in his class. So what if there is?

I've got a Gabriel but we mostly call him Gabe. We rarely come across others and it isn't so uncommon that we never have done. My other two children have more popular names, but if I was to name more children, I think I would look at the top 100 names and choose somewhere at the bottom.

From your title, I instantly thought Martin - has it been mentioned yet? Normal, known, easy to spell and definitely not overused these days.

It doesn't really go with the names listed in your post though, which to me are not quite as "normal".

There’s a Fergus at our nursery, which I love - I’ve earmarked it for if we have another! Grin

My DS is Dennis, something easily recognisable and well known but not a popular name.

PurpleBun · 11/04/2018 21:10

P.S. I'm currently having the same struggle for DD due to arrive in just over 2 weeks!

Well, avoid those in the attached, go on to the ONS data pages and scroll down to the bottom and see what you like. I think there was a nice ordinary name like Nicholas ( prob not Nicholas) that wasn’t used once last year.

My suggestions: ones I rarely hear now for babies ( as opposed to 8+ year olds)

Stephen
Simon
Nicholas
James
Peter
Timothy
Matthew
Mark
William
John - very rare indeed now
Jonathan
Simon
Philip
Charles
David
Andrew

On the apparently more unusual
Jeremy
Hector
Rollo
Roland
Horace
Horatio
Anselm
Hugh ( lots of Hugos)
Robert
Piers
Walter
Alan ( lots of Alan’s)
Ian ( lots of Iains)
Garth ( lots of Gareths)
Clive
Lawrence/Laurence
Hillary
Ivo
Hubert
Jacob
Gervaise
Ronald

Why not have a slightly unusual as a first name, standard classic as second?

mamabears · 11/04/2018 23:17

Wren?
Wesley?
Quinn?
Oliver?

pipilangstrumpf · 12/04/2018 07:49

Oliver is uncommon Hmm. It's been THE most popular boys name for years!
