It's just popped into my head! We've actually settled on Fiadh but just so pass the time whilst on a nightshfit I'd like to know people's opinions 😊

Prefer Morag to Fiadh, I know a Morag and she’s lovely :)

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 12/03/2018 18:20

Apparently I was very nearly a Morag.

I'm glad my parents chose a different name though as I find Morag quite harsh sounding.

dotdotdotmustdash · 12/03/2018 18:43

Rhymes with Bawbag. Best avoided.

midsomermurderess · 12/03/2018 18:47

I think Morag is quite old fashioned, the ones I know are mid 50s at least.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 12/03/2018 18:47

I've not met a Moira under the age of 40, and I quite like it. I like Morag too.

rumblytummy1 · 12/03/2018 18:49

I dont like Morag , and I have never heard of Fiadh.
Your DD will spend the rest of her life with people asking how to pronounce it...

Notthisnotthat · 12/03/2018 18:49

The Morag I know got called Toerag all the way through school. Scottish here too.

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 12/03/2018 19:21

Interestingly lecossaise I know several Mhairis who all pronounce it "Vhairi" but all the Mhorags I know pronounce it exactly the same as "Morag". Weird!

I agree with the different pronunciations - I would say of the ones I know the pronunciations of Mor-ag and Mor-ig are about 50/50

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 12/03/2018 19:22

One of the Mhorags I know is nicknamed "Monie" which is horrible - pronounced like Moanie!

lecossaise · 12/03/2018 19:40

@Rylan I stand corrected then (my knowledge of Gaelic pronunciation being rudimentary at best)! No, Monie wouldn't be my choice of nickname either. But it is an improvement on Toe-rag!

1haudyerwheesht · 12/03/2018 19:58

What about Morven?

IWouldLikeToKnow · 12/03/2018 20:04

I quite like Morag, but I really love Fiadh

Puremince · 12/03/2018 20:28

I like Morag (am Scottish) but I too knew one who was called Toerag at school.

BonnieF · 12/03/2018 20:40

I have only met one Morag, a former colleague. She was a lovely person as well as being very tall and very pretty, so I’m biased in favour. Smile

HoratioNightboy · 12/03/2018 21:51

Love Morag! I know a few, all pronounced to rhyme with Toerag, but I think this is a Lowland pronunciation, and Highlanders pronounce it Morrig. Could be wrong though.

Only one of them was shortened - to Mo - but it seems a bit daft, given that the name is aleady a diminutive form of Mòr (More).

heron98 · 13/03/2018 11:23

I think they are both horrible (sorry).

starkid · 13/03/2018 14:31

Vile!

What about Margot?
Similar feel, but sounds nicer (in my opinion) and less harsh

LoveInTokyo · 13/03/2018 19:27

I like Morag but it seems like a bit of a Marmite name!

FleurDelacoeur · 15/03/2018 07:56

It's my name. I hated it as a child, I desperately wanted to change it to Tracey. I don't have a middle name either so didn't have the option of using that instead.

After 40 odd years though I've got used to it and can't imagine being called anything else. In Scotland at least it's a fairly well-known name and you don't get a confused expression when you tell someone what your name is. People generally know how to spell it. It's fairly timeless and doesn't date me to the 70s like Tracey or the 80s like Kylie/Kayleigh. It's not uber-popular but not unheard of either - every other mother at school appears to be Kate/Katie/Kathryn/Cath/Cat but there are are only two or three Morags.

Have only ever had a couple of issues with it, when I lived in London lots of people had never heard of my name and I got Megan/Morgan a lot. Not an issue in Scotland though. Also the "ag" with the hard g is impossible to pronounce in some languages, especially Spanish. They sort of make a strangulated "acchhhhh" sound. So when I was living there I became Mara for the duration. Much easier.

Zigging · 24/09/2021 08:06

Really sorry( also I know this is an old thread , I just came across it)
But please don’t use this name Confused

peaceinourtime · 24/09/2021 17:51

Scottish

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/09/2021 19:14

I love Morag. It was the name of my lovely form tutor in secondary school. I also sing the Katie Morag song in my head whenever I hear it lol but it's a lovely name and I would be very excited to meet a little Morag. Much nicer than the similar sounding Margot which is everywhere atm

ramonaquimby · 24/09/2021 19:14

Love it!

Darceyhemingway · 24/09/2021 20:01

@Zigging 3 years too late I'm sure the baby is named by now
