Guessing Game

Thought this would make a fun thread and maybe also provide names for people that are choosing that they wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

Think of a name (your child's or any name really) and provide 3 clues.

Other posters have to guess the name and once someone gets it right, it's their turn!

I'll start:

2 syllables

Very definitely a boys name but there is a feminine version

2 very common abbreviations/nicknames

OP posts:

Could be Hermione, but I'm not very up on cartoon cats......

user1459464195 · 13/03/2018 21:24

Oops, sorry I missed Basil! Blame sleep deprivation... Smile
Not Hermione

HecatesBroom · 13/03/2018 21:25

Rats, no... wrong language... in English hermione is 4 syllables.... I was thinking Her - my -own.
I've never ever heard of anyone with the name, but I think the answer is

Jessamine

HecatesBroom · 13/03/2018 21:30

In which case I'll say "Doing, time for bed."

And let the first person to pick up that clue set the next one.
Night, night,
H

@HecatesBroom has it - Jessamine!

user1459464195 · 13/03/2018 21:37

I also missed Margaret from my list

HecatesBroom · 14/03/2018 07:04

Good Morning,
I have to go out for about an hour so if anyone's around here's one to think about.

It's a name which changes sex depending on the language.
Someone of this name was the victim of a famous miscarriage of justice in the 1920s.
It's the name of the leader of a political party (and a musician)

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2018 11:09

Nicola? It fits the "changes sex depending on country" and "political party leader" clues but I can't think of any musicians named Nicola and I have no idea about the miscarriage of justice....

HecatesBroom · 14/03/2018 11:18

Nicola Benedetti: Scottish violinist (with an Italian surname so you don't know straight off that she's a woman).

Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were executed for a payroll shooting they probably didn't commit in 1920
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacco_and_Vanzetti

it became a "cause celebre" and Joan Baez sang about them:

I was going to do similar with Andrea but couldn't come up with any really famous Andreas apart from Boccelli.

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2018 11:43

I'm learning a lot from this thread! Also it would be lovely to hear of a newborn Nicola. I suppose it's considered dated in the UK, but I like it a lot.

Anyway, new clue:

Unisex name with a Gaelic history and geography (to this day!). There's a Welsh name that sounds the same but is spelt differently.

HecatesBroom · 14/03/2018 12:17

Reece / Rhys?

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2018 12:26

Not Reece/Rhys I'm afraid

HecatesBroom · 14/03/2018 14:36

Eoin (Owen)?

flybabyfly · 14/03/2018 14:57

Rowan?

DuggeeHugs · 14/03/2018 16:08

Gwylim/William

DuggeeHugs · 14/03/2018 16:11

Meredith/Meredydd

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2018 18:47

None of these I'm afraid. Do you want another clue?

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2018 18:48

Try focusing on the Gaelic geography - that's a big clue

applesandpears56 · 14/03/2018 19:40

Erin?

DuggeeHugs · 14/03/2018 19:40

Ennis?

flybabyfly · 14/03/2018 19:58

Clare?

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2018 20:27

Nope, nope and nope sorry.

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2018 20:29

It was a popular name for girls born in the 80s and possibly early 90s in England. I believe it's considered more of a male name in Ireland.

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2018 20:30

Clare is a close guess.... since there's a County Clare....

flybabyfly · 14/03/2018 20:34

Shannon?
