Our baby girl is due in June. We're stuck on names. Help! Which do you prefer?

Marisa. Lovely for a girl and a grown up. Beautiful name.

As someone who works in a primary school, please no more Matilidas and Tillys. So over done. And not even that nice! I wouldn't want to be a grown up Tilly.

EchidnasPhone · 08/03/2018 16:59

Love Matilda. Have you considered Larissa?

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/03/2018 19:03

Marissa is lovely

I used to love Matilda but it's become so well used that I find it a bit dull now

AnyaMoondial · 08/03/2018 19:22

Beatrice is great, nn Bea is lovely too.

BlackberryandNettle · 08/03/2018 19:33

Marisa. Matilda is lovely too but lots around.

MikeUniformMike · 08/03/2018 19:59

Matilda is too popular. You have months to think of a name. Marissa is nice but I don't love it. it will get shortened.

PinkLemonade4 · 08/03/2018 21:38

Adore Marissa.

Hate Matilda.

simonthedog · 08/03/2018 21:43

I know one Marisa, who is about 50, pronounced the same as Marissa. I think it is much nicer than Matilda.

DavidPuddy · 08/03/2018 21:49

Marissa is nice.

How about Melisande? Although you have possibility of Mel nickname again.

FizzyGreenWater · 09/03/2018 11:07

Tilly Mint?

Sounds like your DH is more focused on thinking of winsome little nicknames than actually naming a person. Matilda is fine, she will possibly be Tilly, she won't be Tilly Mint, what she definitely will be is one of many, many Matildas in her school. It's overused, so it will date. The Matildas of now will be the Claires of the 80s!

I know what you mean about Ma-reese-ah/Ma-riss-ah. I think in the UK you could choose which way you pronounce it though.

Either way, Marisa/Marissa with nn Missy or Mimi is loads better than Matilda/Tilly.

lottiegarbanzo · 09/03/2018 11:20

Have you Googled Tilly Mint? The first result is a Mumsnet thread from 2004, asking what it means! The answer is effectively 'Little Madam' (female with ideas above her station) in Scouse dialect.

I just don't think nicknames happen like that. They're usually spontaneous, unexpected and often unrelated to the given name.

I remember meeting a grown-up Tilly and an Amelia about 16 years ago and thinking 'what lovely unusual, old-fashioned names. Touch of the Enid Blyton about them'. Not so unusual now.

Beatrice is lovely too - I think it's increased in popularity but not in such a mainstream way.

FizzyGreenWater · 09/03/2018 11:30

Hahaha OP then google Tilly Mint and let him know that he's effectively going to be calling her 'Little Scouse Madam'

That should put him off!!!

Snipples · 09/03/2018 13:37

Little scouse madam has made me laugh as DH is scouse. That's probably where he's got it from.

We'll probably go for Beatrice I think. I don't want Matilda and he doesn't want Marissa. ~the absolute swine~

Thanks for all the help!

Beatrice is great. Actually better than either of the others, I think!

Bea or Bibi is fab.

LastNightsMakeUp · 09/03/2018 15:05

Beatrice would get my vote, a little less common than Matilda, more classic and chic than Marissa IMO.
Bea is a cute nickname

greatpotential · 10/03/2018 09:01

Marissa/Marisa is lovely. There are too many Matildas at the moment

WashingMatilda · 10/03/2018 18:07

Matilda 100% no contest.
Marrisa strikes me as very American.

My middle name is Matilda and it was virtually unheard of when I was born. I always wish it was my first name Sad

It's having a comeback now for sure, but school isn't going to be overrun by them, and there's so many shortening options (Mattie, Tilda, Tilly) that it probably wouldn't be a problem.

Snipples · 10/03/2018 18:11

Thanks all - we've decided on Beatrice.

Baby will be called Beatrice Catherine Matilda [Surname].

Appreciate all the input. Glad we have the name sorted now.

How lovely 💕

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/03/2018 19:21

Lovely name OP.

WashingMatilda · 10/03/2018 19:41

Beatrice is lovely as well!! Congratulations

SpongeCake23 · 10/03/2018 19:46

Matilda

BewareOfDragons · 10/03/2018 20:27

Beatrice is lovely.

Amused that he still snuck 'Matilda' in even though you don't want it. He does know that you're the one that does the hard work on having the baby, right? You shouldn't have a name you don't like. Wink

heateallthebuns · 10/03/2018 22:55

Marissa
