Our baby girl is due in June. We're stuck on names. Help! Which do you prefer?

Marissa is lovely.Matilda is cute for a little girl but not so suitable for an adult in my opinion.

noitsachicken · 08/03/2018 06:49

I don’t understand the popularity of Matilda, it’s sounds hard and clunky to me. Also reminds me of nursery rhyme characters.
Beatrice is lovely, best by far.

Swishswish26 · 08/03/2018 06:55

I like both but I have two children at primary school and there are Matilda’s in almost every year group, more than one too. Sometime shortened to Tilly.

strawberrypenguin · 08/03/2018 06:58

Matilda it's a lovely name.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/03/2018 09:18

Marissa.

Matilda is clunky.

FizzyGreenWater · 08/03/2018 10:06

Marisa, but spelled this way - beautiful and classy.

I like Matilda, but honestly they are EVERYWHERE. It's so overused that it's now really boring!

Matilda would probably be Tilly, Marisa/Marissa possibly Issa or Miss? What are your thoughts on nicknames?

Also - have you considered Melissa? That's lovely and very underused, as is Vanessa (I always put those together in my head).

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/03/2018 10:41

Matilda.

Snipples · 08/03/2018 10:46

My DH has decided he likes the idea of Tilly or weirdly Tilly Mint (I have no idea where he got this from!!) and is clinging on to Matilda. I already know of one other Matilda along friends and think it will be very popular over the next few years, and then become quite dated.

I do prefer the spelling Marisa but I believe traditionally it is pronounced Mah-Reese-Ah rather than Mah-Riss-Ah which is what I prefer. I do like Melissa also but prefer Marissa as it's less common and avoids the shortening to Mel.

I like the nickname Rissa if we shorten Marissa but then I'd probably just use the full version as I think it's pretty.

I find picking names so hard. Thanks again for the input. I find boys names much easier!

What about Mirabelle?

fearfultrill · 08/03/2018 11:05

What about Tabitha or Talitha? Sort of on the same thread as Matilda but less common!

DarthNigel · 08/03/2018 12:37

Marissa. Matilda is quite frequently used near me, nice to be a bit different. And I used to love the OC...

pipilangstrumpf · 08/03/2018 13:45

Marissa is so much prettier than Mathilda!

notacooldad · 08/03/2018 13:47

Both are lovely names.
If I was you and Dh it might end up tossing a coin for it!!
I'd be happy with either.

stellarfox · 08/03/2018 13:49

I really like Marissa and Matilda. Marissa makes me think of the OC! Not keen on Melissa at all. You might also like Mariella

notacooldad · 08/03/2018 13:51

I like the nickname Rissa if we shorten Marissa but then I'd probably just use the full version as I think it's pretty
I know a couple of Marissa's at varying ages. It's never shortened. It doesn't need to be. It's lovely as it is and hardly a long word!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/03/2018 14:12

Rissa reminds me of Rizla. Not a good thing Grin

pipilangstrumpf · 08/03/2018 14:16

Please don't shorten Marissa!!

I wonder where this urge to shorten names comes from?

mrsm43s · 08/03/2018 14:20

Marissa by a county mile - Matildas are ten a penny now, and so the name will date. Really not keen on the Tilly nickname either it's part of the ubiquitous Tilly/Millie/Lily/Ellie etc name set that about 85% of girls seem to be called.

Marcipex · 08/03/2018 14:21

Beatrice, by a million miles.

I like Marissa and Matilda, but Matilda is very very popular now.

Interestingly, auto correct changes Marissa to Marisa.

MerryMarigold · 08/03/2018 14:23

I have a Marissa and v v rarely mixed up with Melissa (maybe once in 9 years). I think it's quite exotic. Matilda is much more granny chic/ trendy and personally I don't like it. My other choices were Claudia, Meredith and Kristin. Actually dd is more of a Claudia so I do regret that a bit. Also Marissa is hard for nicknames.

MerryMarigold · 08/03/2018 14:26

Some people call mine Riss or Missy, and I've called her Mimi in the past, but tend to use affectionate names which have no relationship to get actual name at all like 'moshling'.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/03/2018 14:27

I absolutely love Missy and Mimi.

KanyeWesticle · 08/03/2018 14:42

I love Marissa, especially with nn Missy. This would be my top choice!

Matilda is nice but a little childish and less memorable. The Roald Dahl link is nice though. The film remake might lead to a spike in popularity.

pilates · 08/03/2018 14:46

Matilda, dislike Marissa

lottiegarbanzo · 08/03/2018 16:51

Marissa

Matildas are ten a penny now.

Melissa was a briefly fashionable 70s / 80s name. Marissa is far less faddy. Few people will muddle the two (and I agree about avoiding Mel).
