Both nieces have same middle name?

Our daughter has a middle name taken from her grandmother. Recently my brother in law has also given his third child the same middle name.

DH and I aren't offended by this but have never heard this happening before. Is it more common than we realise, or is this unusual?

It's common. Of course it is...families share names which are meaningful. My DD is called X and my niece has X as her middle name. I never even considered that as a "thing" to be worried about.

mamaryllis · 26/02/2018 03:45

Totally, especially with bland easily attachable names.
I think at one point there were only three or four different girls middle names in dd1’s class - Rose, Anne, Elizabeth etc.
Even more common in families I think - we have used a combination of family matriarch names as middle names. Lots of people do the same.

mumgointhroughtorture · 26/02/2018 04:14

I've got the same middle name as my Cousin , Louise and my sister has Jayne like my other Cousin . Don't stress . It's obviously a lovely name .

MakeItStopNeville · 26/02/2018 04:20

My Dd and all of her female cousins on my side share the same middle name. It’s my Mum’s name and my Great Grandma’s Name. I don’t think it’s that unusual.

Snipples · 26/02/2018 04:21

Yes I have the same middle name as my cousins and my brother has the same middle name as his male cousins as we were both named after grandparents. It's very common.

Ivebeenaroundtheblock · 26/02/2018 04:36

born in the 1950's i know hundreds of girls with the middle name marie and boys with the middle name joseph. certainly within families and communities at large.

Elfyn · 26/02/2018 04:37

If it’s May, Elizabeth or (especially) Rose then this will happen a lot OP! I doubt it’s that unusual — every other girl I know has Rose as a middle name, quite literally, so there must be repeats sometimes.

I always chuckle a bit when people ask for middle name ideas on here and get loads of “Wow, Rose was the first name that came to mind for me too!!!”

freakinbananaspiders · 26/02/2018 04:48

My SIL/BIL gave their new baby the same middle name and the first name is a diminutive of DDs first name too Confused

whinetime89 · 26/02/2018 05:00

Our DD2 has the same middle name as 2 of her cousins- one older/ one younger as it is MIL name

eeanne · 26/02/2018 05:04

My DM and her siblings all have the same middle name!

BikeRunSki · 26/02/2018 05:14

2 out of 3 of my nephews have my dad’s name (their grandfather) as their middle name.

I have 3 sets of 2 x boy cousins with the same first names - ie 3 pairs of brothers called Joe and Chris for example - all with the same grandparents. (One set are step kids that married in, but it still means that my uncles (brothers) have their dc vey similar names that abbreviate to the same short forms).

flapjackfairy · 26/02/2018 05:18

I knew 2 brothers who both had the same middle name ( their fathers ). I thought it was a nice idea.

amzi · 26/02/2018 05:27

Me and my cousin have the same middle name, it’s from our great grandmothers name.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 26/02/2018 06:07

My son and his cousin have the same middle name. It's their deceased grandfather's

namechange2222 · 26/02/2018 06:15

I have five cousins who have my middle name as theirs! named after my late Grandma

liquidrevolution · 26/02/2018 06:37

First names run in 2s and 3s in my family. No idea about middle names but certain there are a few Williams which was my grandfather's middle name.

I quite like having a double. Smile

Shiraznowplease · 26/02/2018 06:42

My ds middle name was given by dB as his first name and his other middle name and my niece has my dd middle name as her middle names. Dh and I joke that they had to stick at two children as they had run out of our names to use!

AtiaoftheJulii · 26/02/2018 06:50

Yup, dd and our niece have the same middle name, honouring their shared great grandmother.

lalaloopyhead · 26/02/2018 06:56

Yes, I have two neices that are sisters that have the same middle name (I did think that was a bit odd tbh), this is their Mothers (not my dsis) middle name also. By coincidence (though a fairly common name for the time) it is my middle name and I gave it to my eldest daughter as her middle name.

deptfordgirl · 26/02/2018 06:57

My sil recently gave her ds the same middle name as our ds. I actually think she didn't know our ds's middle name as it's not a family name or anything. Really don't mind.

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 26/02/2018 06:58

Lots of doubles in our family and none of them are "family" names either.

On my DH's side of the family we have a nephew whose first name is the same as our DS's middle name.

On my side of the family we have 2 nieces who share middle names with 2 of our DDs, (2 different names) and a nephew whose first name is the same as our DS's middle name (same name as is repeated in DH's family).

We also have several cousins whose DC's names are the same as first or middle names of our DC or my siblings' DC.

None of them are family names - we just have the same taste in names. No-one has ever batted an eyelid about it

LivLemler · 26/02/2018 07:14

My cousin and I share a middle name, and our sisters share another one. Not even family names, just our generation's equivalents of Rose.

DazzlingMilton · 26/02/2018 07:54

Pretty much all the girls in my family have the same middle name, and all the boys too. Where parents have wanted another one they just have two middle names. One is that of our paternal grandmother who fathered three adoring children and died quite young, the other was our paternal great great grandfather whose name was passed as first name to many of the following sons. I think its totally normal and I really like it.

halcyondays · 26/02/2018 07:56

I've got the same middle name as my cousin.

Appuskidu · 26/02/2018 07:57

Very common!
