Both nieces have same middle name?

Our daughter has a middle name taken from her grandmother. Recently my brother in law has also given his third child the same middle name.

DH and I aren't offended by this but have never heard this happening before. Is it more common than we realise, or is this unusual?

I would think this is really common as people often choose a middle name after someone in the family. Me and my cousin have the same middle name, which is our granny's first name.

Oysterbabe · 26/02/2018 08:15

My dad, brothers and nephews all have the same middlename. It's a family tradition and I don't think it's unusual to do that.

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 26/02/2018 08:17

DS has the same middle name as his grandad, uncle and cousin. That's why it is his middle name - family tradition

ArcheryAnnie · 26/02/2018 08:24

I've got a friend where most of her sisters have the same middle name! I think due more to "fuck, what can we call them?" rather than any grand plan. Nobody cares.

I've got a bazillion cousins and I could not tell you what any of their middle names were.

BikeRunSki · 26/02/2018 08:27

I know a family where all the boys/men have the same first name (and obviously surname). They have a complicated system of who uses the full version, various diminutives, middle names. They all live in the same town, and it’s s very boy heavy family. It’s nuts.

bruffin · 26/02/2018 08:33

Ds has same middle name as cousin. Its a family name that DH and his DF has as middle name.
Dd has the same middke name as my DM and DGM.
Its a nice tradition. I dont have a middle name at allSad

BitOutOfPractice · 26/02/2018 08:48

My ExH and his own brother have the same middle name!! Now that's odd I think (both named after their dad) but cousins is quite common and understandable I think

myrtleWilson · 26/02/2018 08:55

My sisters had the same middle name, although that was partly down to being unexpected twins (until birth of first) so naming an extra baby was a chew! I think it’s nice

DameBaggySmith · 26/02/2018 09:05

Fab, thank you for all of your comments. Good to know it's common. I've researched my family history quite far back and have never seen it so it's new to me and my DH.

I know someone who gave their children the same middle name, as they are girls they wanted to keep a connection between them if they married and changed their surnames.

MrsElvis · 26/02/2018 09:23

I know two adult brothers with the same middle name and two primary school age sisters with the same hyphenated first name. I do think 'couldn't you think of anything else?' Confused but ok....

In your case I think it's normal as has family meaning.

I thought if I had a Ds I would give him my grandmothers surname as a middle name. I just forgot this idea and found out my niece has it as an extra middle name. I wouldn't have thought anything of it if both children has ended up with it

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/02/2018 09:29

Every other girl for the last 10+ years has been given the middle name Rose, Grace or May, so lots of people, even in families, share middle names.

I'm only slightly exaggerating.

NoodlesLivesHere · 26/02/2018 09:33

The first born girl in my mother's family all have the same middle name so I share a middle name with several cousins and my mother.

It's a nice family connection that doesn't disappear with other life events.

susurration · 26/02/2018 21:36

There are several girls down the generations in my family with the middle name Elizabeth. It's become a family name, so not unusual.

onlyonaTuesday · 26/02/2018 22:52

All female cousins in my family under the age of 40 have the same middle name.
It's just a family thing.
Something I could not be arsed to carry on 😀

OutyMcOutface · 26/02/2018 22:55

It's quite common in some families to have a handful of 'family' names that get used over and over again.

C0untDucku1a · 26/02/2018 22:56

Lots in my family have my grandmothers name as a middle name. My dd has her middle name as a middle name.

My ds and my nephew both have my dad’s name as a middle name.

Middle names for us are damily names, not rabdom names, so yes there will be lots of the same!

MummySparkle · 26/02/2018 22:58

I have the same middle name as my mum and my grandma. My grandma's sister's first name has our middle name as part of it (think Beth / Elizabeth)

My uncle and my granddad also have the same middle name, I'm not sure how far up that line it goes, at some point it must've been someone's first name!

I bucked the trend, my DD has my grandma's name as her middle name.

I always assumed middle names ran in families

BevBrook · 26/02/2018 22:58

My sister has the same middle name as our cousin’s first name
My son’s first name is his cousin’s middle name.
I can’t see the issue really, nobody uses middle names in every day life anyway!

SouthwarkSkaters · 26/02/2018 23:02

My DD and my niece's DD have the same middle name, after DD's and DN's grandmother (MIL who passed away before I met DH). I think it's lovely.

PandaCat · 26/02/2018 23:08

My sister has the same middle name as our cousin! I don't think it's that unusual with family names.

ragdoll700 · 26/02/2018 23:20

I have the same middle name as about 5 of my cousins it was my grandmothers name

Proudmummy2MA · 26/02/2018 23:37

My son and two of my cousin's children have similar middle names as they are in honour of our grandfather. His name was Charles. One of the great-grandchildren has the middle name Charles, one Charlie and one Charlotte. So not exactly the same middle name but very similar as they all honour the same person.
