Seonaid is Scottish Gaelic girls name. Lovely
Shaw-naa

Duckeggloo · 24/02/2018 16:23

not everyone on mumsnet lives in England.

PhelanThePain · 24/02/2018 16:25

Is that to me duck? Confused

Duckeggloo · 24/02/2018 16:27

Also phelan, the op has said she is not in Ireland therefore a name like seonaid, sinhead or other Irish heritage will not be easy to spell for most people. Scots Gaelic is not a first or second language for a huge number of the population, therefore the name will not be straightforward to spell.
I had a few friends with even less common Gaelic names and they get misprounced and spelt to the extent one of my friends was called a completely different name during her marriage ceremony.

PhelanThePain · 24/02/2018 16:32

therefore a name like seonaid, sinhead or other Irish heritage

Neither of those are Irish names. You could try google if you’re struggling with the spelling. There are loads of Irish baby name websites out there. Really no excuse to come on a baby name thread and throw random letters down and hope for the best. Or, If you don’t know the names don’t suggest them.

Duckeggloo · 24/02/2018 16:34

Delighted to now know who the thread police are, thanks phelan.

MadMags · 24/02/2018 16:40

Wtf is sinhead?! 😂😂

Jenasaurus · 24/02/2018 16:40

This reminds me of the time I was told by email that Padraig was expected for a meeting along with others. I was still waiting for Padraig when asked if he was hear yet, I said no but Porec had arrived! I really hadn't a clue that was the pronunciation (i was very young) My DS has a lovely Irish GF and they say they will use Irish names for any offspring so I am watching this thread and learning.

Jenasaurus · 24/02/2018 16:41

*here not hear!

PhelanThePain · 24/02/2018 16:43

It’s hardly thread policing to think that someone suggesting Irish names on an Irish baby name thread might actually bother to find out how they’re spelled before posting them. I mean what on earth is the point of suggesting “Nhiamn”? It’s not a name.

PhelanThePain · 24/02/2018 16:45

Wtf is sinhead?

It’s the priests’ nickname for the biggest offenders at confessions madmags Grin

MadMags · 24/02/2018 16:48

Phelan Grin

SeamusMacDubh · 24/02/2018 16:55

Uhhh @RavenWings my DD is called Barbara Hmm

It's cool, I know it's not everyone's taste but I'm not an Ava-Mae, Trixie-Rae, Bella-Rose type person Grin

SeamusMacDubh · 24/02/2018 16:56

In response to OP, Fiona is lovely, would nn Fi though not Fifi past age 2.

deadringer · 24/02/2018 16:56

If you want an Irish name that is easy to say or spell you can't go wrong with Cara or Fia (fiadh).

RavenWings · 24/02/2018 16:58

I actually like the name Barbara. I'll stand by expecting to see a Barbara hanging out with Geraldine and Shirley instead of being with Millie and Sophia! It is outdated for the current generation.

People pick names way off trend all the time.

Jenasaurus · 24/02/2018 16:59

Rowena is pronounced how its spelt, so not too confusing

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 24/02/2018 17:31

I quite like Barbara

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 24/02/2018 17:59

I love the name Barbara (or Bairbre as gaeilge)

MikeUniformMike · 25/02/2018 10:10

Rowena has a straightforward spelling. Jenasaurus, not sure how you can say that it is pronounced how its spelt.
It's pronounced Ro-wee-nah. It's a pretty name.
I like Barbara too.

MissMoodyMoo · 25/02/2018 14:04

@deadringer I LOVE the name fiadh 😍 I think it's my new top favourite! And it still has the connection to my late aunty Fi, thank you for suggesting I really do love it!

DramaAlpaca · 25/02/2018 14:19

Fiadh is gorgeous in an Irish accent. In an English accent it often sounds exactly the same as 'fear' which is unfortunate.

MissMoodyMoo · 25/02/2018 14:26

We are in Scotland and it sounds just as nice 😍 I can't believe how drawn to it I am and I've had about 50 name changes in the last month 😂

DramaAlpaca · 25/02/2018 14:29

It sounds lovely in a Scottish accent too Smile

deadringer · 25/02/2018 16:50

Moo if you like Fiadh you might like Fianna too, its also very similar to Fiona and can be shortened to Fi.
