What are your thoughts on Adelaide for a girl. I have no personal associations with the place I just like the name, it has an old-fashioned feel to it for me

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Lilymossflower · 22/02/2018 22:39

Nice

Sophronia · 22/02/2018 22:41

It was my great grandmother’s name. I really like it.

BackforGood · 22/02/2018 22:46

It's not for me.
I'm not a fan of people being named after places.... don't like Paris, India etc as people's names.

Gorgeous! Just a word of warning though, it's a fairly top choice at the bookies for Will and Kate's baby #3. In case that bothers you...

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/02/2018 22:52

Guys and Dolls sprang to mind, but I love that so yes, nice. Smile

Mumsnut · 22/02/2018 23:18

BackforGood - Adelaide the place was named after Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV.

Bellabluea · 22/02/2018 23:21

It’s my favourite name in the world!
Dh, however, would not budge.

NoNoCharlieRascal · 22/02/2018 23:25

Makes me think of the Heidi books. I adored them growing up.

Love it

MajesticWhine · 22/02/2018 23:25

I don’t like it. I’m not crazy for place names as names. It’s not the worst though. Wasn’t there an Aunt Adelaide in nanny McPhee? Makes me think of that.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/02/2018 14:37

Oh I didnt realise it was a popular contender for royal baby #3

Wrong way around. The place is named for a person, not vice versa. It's a very old female name, many many times older than Australia.

It's a nice name. The place itself is ok-haveyou been there? It's nicer than the majority of British cities but pretty dull.

DullAndOld · 23/02/2018 16:23

it's a fine name but I can only say it in a broad Aussie accent...

MikeUniformMike · 23/02/2018 16:36

I don't love it. Adeline is awful though.

AthenaAshton · 23/02/2018 16:40

Was going to say yes in spades until the comment about it being a Royal Baby possibility (not that I have anything against royal babies, but it might make it over-popular...) It sounds lovely in French. I hadn't thought about Australia, but my Geography is crapulous.

Fruitcocktail6 · 23/02/2018 16:43

As others said, the place is named after a person, not the other way around.

NiceViper · 23/02/2018 16:43

Paris was Prince of Troy a couple, of thousand years before the city was founded.

I think it's a shame that when places (or cars, come to that) are named after people, the origin gets a bit lost.

LonginesPrime · 23/02/2018 16:57

Reminds me of Guys and Dolls too.

And now I have the Adelaide song stuck in my head..

Sarahh2014 · 23/02/2018 16:58

Love it, was my fave if ds had been girl

Standardpubquizname · 23/02/2018 17:51

Its a lovely name, the name came before the place so not the same as calling a child, London, Brooklyn etc

I didn't know that it was a contender for Royal Baby 3 but don't think they'll go for it, doesn't quite go with George and Charlotte somehow.

midsomermurderess · 23/02/2018 18:20

The place was named for a person. I rather like it, the name, that is.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/02/2018 18:27

Love it ! 😄

HJ40 · 23/02/2018 18:31

I really like it and it's on my list, but I worry people will think it's because of the place, because they don't know any differently. Ho hum, I'll keep pondering. Good luck OP!

FWIW, I also don't see it going with George & Charlotte, but I guess it does have the right pedigree.

alpineibex · 23/02/2018 18:33

Stunning.
