Unsure of spelling

Hi all

Had a gender scan this morning and found out we're expecting a girl.

My BF really likes the name Harry for a girl, but I'm unsure of the best spelling Harri or Harrie?

Any thoughts please? We're not keen on Harriet.

Thanks

Why not go with Harriet, nn Harry?

If you were just going to go with Harry then I'd spell it Harri, that's the only way I've ever seen Harry spelt for a girl.

PinkAvocado · 23/02/2018 07:18

I echo many pp-don’t give your daughter a boy’s name. If you wouldn’t call your boy Jane then why would you do it the other way around?

Dixiestampsagain · 23/02/2018 08:22

My DS is Harri - I think it would work on a girl too.

pipilangstrumpf · 23/02/2018 08:38

How about Harrie and another middle name?

MimiSunshine · 23/02/2018 14:28

I wouldn’t go with Harry as until people meet her they will think she’s a bit.
Personally I’d go for Harrie as that looks more feminine or Hari as it’s noticeable not Harry so will stand apart from the little boy Harry’s in any future classes etc

I have a name with multiple options and mine not being the main one, so saying the equivalent of its Harrie but with an ie hasn’t really been a chore’ doesn’t seem to bother Catherine’s or Katherine’s either

SaraTwelve8 · 23/02/2018 15:00

Love Harrie! Really dislike Harriet. Harrie is a great name. Congratulations!

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2018 15:42

Those of you who are so enthusiastic about calling a girl Harry (because that's what you're doing regardless of spelling-we tend to hear people's names being said rather than see them written down) would you be so enthusiastic about a poster who wanted to call her son Rose?

Biglittletown · 23/02/2018 15:49

My name is Andi , can't recall anyone having a issue with my name or it's spelling .although I get get called ange a lot Confused...love harri for a little girl

TenThousandSpoons · 23/02/2018 15:57

There will most probably be a boy called Harry in the class. She will therefore be “Harry the girl”. (We have “Frankie” (male) and “Frankie the girl” in dd’s class.)

thUnderdog · 23/02/2018 16:06

I agree with the idea that you wouldn't give your boy a girl's name, so why is it ok the other way around? And ONLY the other way around?

In the bigger picture, it feels like women need to have all the female and male qualities these days, but men can still just have male qualities and that's fine. I'm not sure how to articulate this feeling better, but you might get what I mean anyway.

I knew a girl called Harry! She was v v cool

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2018 16:33

“In the bigger picture, it feels like women need to have all the female and male qualities these days, but men can still just have male qualities and that's fine.“

It’s worse than that, really- men absolutely mustn’t have female qualities! The names thing is a good proxy for this. Girl with a boy’s name? Cool. Boy with a girl’s name? Never in a million years. And boy’s names that start to be used for girls fall out of favour for boys. Someone has already mentioned Evelyn........

Dixiestampsagain · 23/02/2018 17:10

I know about 4 girls/women known as Harry/Harri, all of whom have the name Angharad.

macbethh · 23/02/2018 17:11

Harrie

Grimmfebruary · 23/02/2018 17:13

I love it, especially the Harrie spelling. I also love Andie for a girl.

If it’s any consolation, my son is Jesse and we’re constantly pointing out he’s a boy.

macbethh · 23/02/2018 17:13

Also I love the name

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2018 17:50

Jesse is a boy’s name.

Yellowshadeofgreen · 23/02/2018 17:59

Meh I know a Tracy who is a man.

Harrie seems like a fine girls name for me.

Grimmfebruary · 23/02/2018 18:00

I know it is, I was just making a point when people are saying she’ll spend her life with people thinking she’s a boy if she’s called harry it’s not the end of the world.

Cosmoa · 23/02/2018 18:09

@BertrandRussell honestly of someone wanted to call their son Rose I wouldn't be baffled... (Not these days anyway)

However I think it's kind of a stupid question. I think Harri is a great name for a girl but I don't think the same of every boys name...

Some names sound unisex.. Some don't. It's as simple as that!

GummyGoddess · 23/02/2018 18:24

@Cosmoa Harry does not sound like a unisex name. It sounds like a boys name, she will not thank her parents for saddling her with this name, or with a 'unique' spelling. That way it's a double whammy of explaining why she has a boys name and why it's spelt wrong. I'm pretty sick of explaining why my name is spelt wrong even though it's a normal female name.

nooka · 23/02/2018 18:26

Tracy and Jesse are boys names. Tracy made the boy to girl transition long enough ago it seems odd for a man, but it's still a male name in origin. Like Evelyn and Hilary. Doesn't happen the other way around though, with long established girls names becoming popular for boys. I expect people would react quite negatively to a boy called Rose.

To me Harri and Harrie are names teenage Harriets give themselves, usually temporarily. I think they both look a bit lightweight, but then I don't like diminutives as given names as I think they take options away from children. A girl called Harri has very few options other than changing their name completely if they decide they don't like having a misspelled boys name and would prefer something more traditional.

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2018 18:42

"Some names sound unisex.. Some don't. It's as simple as that!"

Interesting that they are always boy's names.......

BertrandRussell · 23/02/2018 18:44

"Meh I know a Tracy who is a man"

That's because Tracy is a male name. How old is he?
