Unsure of spelling

Hi all

Had a gender scan this morning and found out we're expecting a girl.

My BF really likes the name Harry for a girl, but I'm unsure of the best spelling Harri or Harrie?

Any thoughts please? We're not keen on Harriet.

Thanks

I agree ‘ari’ short for a nice name like arabella or Ariana much better though

rebelrosie12 · 22/02/2018 21:02

Harri. Defo

MikeUniformMike · 22/02/2018 21:05

Don't use Angharad if you are not welsh. If you want to call your baby Harry, call her Harry or Harry short for Harriet. I don't really understand why you would want to give a girl a boy's name.

ScattyCharly · 22/02/2018 21:05

I'd still have Harriet as the name on the BC. And shorten it to Harrie.

JaggyJobby · 22/02/2018 21:21

I was at the doctors today and they called out for Mr Harry Smith (different name but also a traditionally male name) and a woman stood up and shouted "MISS! MISS HARRY SMITH!!" very angrily.

MikeUniformMike · 22/02/2018 21:40

How about Billie instead?

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 22/02/2018 21:52

I'd really just call her Harriet. Or choose a different name.

You don't even need to use it on a daily basis, she will be Harrie to you and everyone else if that's how you introduce her, but give her the option of she wants it for when she's older.

I'm Karly with a K, I spent my whole life saying K not a C. That's not the end of the world saying Harrie with an IE.

It isn't really the same though, it's more like calling a boy Karly.

What's your name?
Karly.
Carl?
No, Karly. Like the girls name. But with a K.
Oh...

What's your name?
Harrie.
Harriet?
No. Harrie. Like the boys name. But with an ie.
Oh...

Hari is an Indian boys name.

Harri is the Welsh variant spelling of Harry.

Tmgc123 · 22/02/2018 22:11

I have two long complicated names and I don’t care that I have to spell them, or explain the history etc.

I shorten my first name or let people shorten it for me. Weirdly enough they always end up calling me -pants 🤣

Call your baby whatever you like, but the option to shorten is great cause she may not like a name and have no options!

Tmgc123 · 22/02/2018 22:13

Ps, everyone saying you’re choosing a boys name, you’re not. Harrie is a diminutive of Harriet. My baby girls name is Evelyn, which was actually originally a boys name, and then unisex. These people would probably run scared if anyone called a boy Evelyn now 🤣

Knittedfairies · 22/02/2018 22:14

It's an unusual choice for a girl; I’m hoping your surname isn’t Potter..
What about Hattie?

HateSummer · 22/02/2018 22:15

It’s a boys name. Harry is spelt HARRY. That’s why it’s a boys name.

doesthislookoddtoyou · 22/02/2018 22:16

Spell it however you like, your little girl your rules

please don't anyone take this terrible advice. It's your kid, its not your language, you can't just make up your own spellings.

JonesTheSteam · 22/02/2018 22:19

Harri is the Welsh equivalent of Harry and a boy's name.

My nephew has a friend called Harriet and we've always called her Harry. Think Harriet is a v underused name. And a pretty name.

SuperBeagle · 22/02/2018 22:19

I agree that Billie is a much better option.

Annabelle4 · 22/02/2018 22:24

There will probably be one, if not two male Harrys in her class at school OP. She will most likely feel extremely embarrassed and get teased about 'having a boys name'.

If you must, I'd at least call her Harriet on the birth certificate and call her 'Harry' day to day. At least give her the choice.

PaperdollCartoon · 22/02/2018 22:26

Go for Harrie. But yes it would be better to go for Harriet and shorten it, give her the option of a whole name when she’s an adult.

This is hugely outing (I will have to change my name soon) but my name is Harriet and I went by Harrie for a long time. Actually Harrie to family, Harri to everyone else - teenage rebellion - I introduced myself as Harrie all the time and it was never questioned. No one said ‘like a boy’ or ‘oh Harriet?’ They just called me Harrie. I do/did get it spelt Harry a lot though, which is mildly annoying but not the end of the world.

I go by Harriet to all but close friends and family now, and like having the options of names. Actually I love my name, something few people seem to feel. Harry is a shortening for Henry or Harold in the first place anyway, so people getting snippy about Harry being for boys and Harrie not being a whole name are being ridiculous.

Ohyesiam · 22/02/2018 22:54

I have a unisex name, with the female end spelling. When Iwas young I really really hated all the " that's a boys name", it contributed to my low self esteem.
Do consider this in your choice.

MikeUniformMike · 22/02/2018 22:58

She might be in a class where there is Hari, Harry, Harry, Harry, Harriet and girl Harry. There are thousands of nicer names for a girl.

halcyondays · 22/02/2018 23:02

Harry is a boy's name. I don't think she will thank you for it.

Names like Charlie or Toni are different as it's not unusual for them to be used for girls.

BertrandRussell · 22/02/2018 23:07

As I said, only call a girl Harry if you would call a boy Rose.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 22/02/2018 23:13

Would you call her John? Edward? Philip?

Either save Harry for a boy or call her Harriet with the nn Harrie.

You might not like Harriet, but you’re not the one who has to go to school & be an adult female with a man’s name, with no option.

italiancortado · 22/02/2018 23:27

Harry is bad for a girl but harrie and harri are even worse.

Please don't do this to your child.

llangennith · 22/02/2018 23:31

Harry is a boy’s name however you spell it. My grown up niece is Harriet and always been called Harry.
Do your DD a favour and just go with Harriet on the birth certificate so she can have two options and not spend her life explaining her name.

Voice0fReason · 22/02/2018 23:42

If you're lucky, she'll love it.
If not, she'll hate having to introduce herself with a sentence.

Harriet gives her more options
