Keira

SuperBeagle · 09/02/2018 23:40

I think Keira Knightly was Kiera but in America they pronounced it incorrectly so she changed the spelling. Might have made that up though!!

Nope, her parents "misspelt" it on her birth certificate.

Camberleeee · 09/02/2018 23:50

Keira is the female version of the name Keir.

Keira knightly has caused big problems for many Keira’s because in an interview she said her name was a spelling mistake - that was the headline I believe. What actually happened is that she was supposed to be named after an ice skater who’s name was spelt Kiera, but her dad spelt it Keira, which is also a correct spelling.

The article has really bothered me as I’ve had people who read the headline say to me “do you know you spelled your daughters name wrong?” Erm, no I didn’t.

Here’s a screenshot.

Keira or Kiera
Camberleeee · 09/02/2018 23:52

THe “ei” spelling is far more popular.

BonnieF · 09/02/2018 23:58

Ciara.

Anglicised mis-spellings of Celtic names are chavvy.

RavenWings · 09/02/2018 23:58

Ciara is far better than those options.

Camberleeee · 10/02/2018 00:03

It’s the feminine form of Keir. Not the anglicised version of Ciara.

SuperBeagle · 10/02/2018 00:05

Anglicised mis-spellings of Celtic names are chavvy.

Making the assumption that Kiera and Keira are only used in Anglo countries, which is simply incorrect.

DiegoMadonna · 10/02/2018 00:07

Kiera.

Because it's like the boys names Kier and Kieran.

I would pronounce Keira as K-ay-ruh. That might be the influence of my knowledge of languages that are actually pronounced logically, though.

DiegoMadonna · 10/02/2018 00:09

Oh wait, Kier is actually Keir? Well I'm stumped then.

Atticusss · 10/02/2018 00:09

I'd be tempted to think of a new name or she'll have this debate over spelling forever.

LivLemler · 10/02/2018 07:01

Ciara is a name in both Irish and Italian, I think, hence the confusion. Keera in Irish, kee-ah-ra in Italian.

Where the singer who pronounces it Sierra got that from I've no idea - anyone know?

SuperBeagle · 10/02/2018 07:05

Liv Chiara is the Italian name, and it's not connected with Ciara. It's the Italian form of Clara.

Ochre37 · 10/02/2018 08:17

DD's teacher has in their class a Clara, Caoimhe, Keira and Cara!

Would spell it Keira

RavenWings · 10/02/2018 08:31

Oh wait, Kier is actually Keir? Well I'm stumped then

You might be thinking of the Irish names Ciar and Ciaran. Very logical, beautiful names.

LivLemler · 10/02/2018 08:32

Thanks super!

Camberleeee · 10/02/2018 08:39

As someone who has a Keira, I’d choose that speaking again. No issues with pronunciation and her name is rarely spelled wrong.

youarenotkiddingme · 10/02/2018 08:51

I know a Kira.

I've always known Keira or Ciara for the (keer ruh sound

NotAnotherEmma · 10/02/2018 10:18

Keira

Not Ciara, that makes me roll my eyes almost as much as when I see a boy named Ciaran.

LivLemler · 10/02/2018 15:34

Why, Emma?

MikeUniformMike · 10/02/2018 15:39

I don't like it.

MikeUniformMike · 10/02/2018 15:40

Cara is much nicer.

pipilangstrumpf · 10/02/2018 16:07

If you want it pronounced Keer uh then why not spell it Kira? That is unambiguous.

I'd pronounce Clara or Kiara as Kee-ah-ra

pipilangstrumpf · 10/02/2018 16:08

So Kira if you want Kee-ra

and

Kara or Cara if you want Kaa-ra
