Goddess names

Am daydreaming about another DC. DD has a name from Roman mythology which we love (Juno). If we have another DD, I'm thinking perhaps we should also give her a goddess name for fairness.

I like Iris (Greek, rainbows) but worry it's too popular (we have a very common surname as well so would like to steer clear of top 10 if possible) and Diana (Roman, hunting) but is it too associated with the late princess of Wales?

What do you think, wise ones? Any other ideas?

Arrianrod
Morrigon
Bridie
Cerredwen
Rhiannon
Hecate

Pagan goddesses from the British isles, they are all forms of the great goddess, the earth, at different seasons.
I'm not a pagan, but I sometimes get invited to pagan ceremonies by friends who have taught me this stuff.

Can you tell I live near glastonbury?

Kali the destroyer is one manifestation. I've done some research on her recently. She's a bit misunderstood and her meaning varies according to region, apparently!

Atticusss · 09/02/2018 16:16

I love Eris, but it's goddess of war and chaos. I'd still totally use it though.

Wow, my perception of the popularity of Iris is way off buxbaum! It is VERY popular locally though. But such a gorgeous name and I know DH likes it as it was on our final shortlist before, as was Thea - thank you for the reminder sleepingstandingup

PhilippaFawcett Athena is lovely but makes me think of the 90s poster shop Confused but might mention it to DH if/when the time comes and see what he thinks.

RosieCotton yes to Gaia!!

JonnieMcgrath Love Aurora! And the possibility of a little girl with the nickname Rory is v tempting!!

floriad Flora also a possibility but the margarine puts me off Sad

Also like Ishtar and Ceridwen but I think we're a bit too English for them sadly.

You are all awesome Grin

Karin
No one has ever mentioned the margarine (to my face) ;)

But someone did once ask me (jokingly, not maliciously) whether I had a sister named Fauna.

We also wanted a Goddess themed name and went with Thea (and before anyone jumps in, I know she was a Titaness)

QueenOfCatan · 09/02/2018 22:49

We have a DD with a goddess name (Artemis), I also love Minerva and Athena (both in my list but DH dislikes Athena, DD was very nearly Minerva though). I could happily use loads of goddess names though! Juno is beautiful, as is Iris.

I'd say that the Princess Diana association would be strong for many brits though.

SuperBeagle · 09/02/2018 23:37

Hera is one of my favourites, but Juno is her Roman equivalent, so I wouldn't do that. Not only that, but Hera is hardly the greatest namesake.

Names without the negative connotations:

  • Phoebe
  • Daphne
  • Freya
  • Clio
  • Hebe
  • Iris
  • Thalia
  • Diana
  • Luna
  • Ceres
Atticusss · 10/02/2018 00:05

If you use Aurora everyone will think she's named after the Disney princess.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 10/02/2018 00:08

Or the northern lights.

VileyRose · 10/02/2018 06:12

I love Kali. Such a strong name

Rhiannon
Morgan
Brigid

KarineAimee · 10/02/2018 09:08

Ooh yes superbeagle Thalia!

Michaela is the Goddess of shopping.

JadeT2 · 10/02/2018 09:13

We have a Thea and at the moment we like Iris and Aurora Smile

MargaretCavendish · 10/02/2018 09:16

Do you live somewhere posh? Names normally move down socially, so if Iris is trending in Kensington or whatever it might be foretelling a bigger boom in popularity...

caoraich · 10/02/2018 09:24

We did this with our cats Blush - we had Freya and Juno

Love Minerva and there are some good Celtic/Gaelic goddess names too - Aífe, Morrigan, Brigit, Niamh

KarineAimee · 10/02/2018 12:50

MargaretCavendish Yes, it is fairly posh round here, although we are not!

caoraich Yes, we get a lot of people telling us their cat or dog is Juno, way more than other children! I don't mind - a lovely name is still lovely even if an animal has it too Grin

Ha ha OP I quite agree - I often get "why did you call them human names?" (Also had a dog called Stephen Grin )
There are some great mythological names for boys too. Loads of choice!
