It's got quite a nice sound to it, iyswim. But it instantly makes me think of Steven Avery of Making a Murderer fame, sorry.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 08/02/2018 15:03

Quite feminine but I like it. I know it’s traditionally a boy’s name but it’s my grandmother’s so I think of it as feminine.

SweetChickadee · 08/02/2018 15:07

very popular where I live (not UK) and Averys are always girls.

Minestheoneinthegreen · 08/02/2018 15:55

I know a 40 something man called Avery - he is new York Jewish.

glitterbiscuits · 08/02/2018 15:56

I’d just think Aviary.

It’s not for me.

Mugshotzforlunch · 08/02/2018 15:58

Makes me think of Jackson Avery from greys anatomy and his bitch of a mother.

mommybear1 · 08/02/2018 16:01

Love it!

JennyOnAPlate · 08/02/2018 16:01

My mum has one in her garden with birds in it. Sorry.

theothersideoftheworld · 08/02/2018 16:03

Jackson Avery from Greys. Yum.

SoupDragon · 08/02/2018 16:03

Your mum has a badly spelt and mispronounced aviary in her garden?

ZaZathecat · 08/02/2018 16:03

I'd only heard of the Nashville character too. I quite like it.

Carouselfish · 08/02/2018 16:45

Aviary. That's all I think.
It's very American.

SandAndSea · 08/02/2018 16:50

Avery? It sounds like a business name. Possibly waste management or something to do with granite.

averylongtimeago · 08/02/2018 16:52

Personally I think it's more of a girls name.....

joystir59 · 08/02/2018 16:56

Proper wank

RaininSummer · 08/02/2018 17:01

Not keen. There is one in Grays Anatomy. It makes me instantly think of budgies flying about though (aviary).

Meemzinha · 08/02/2018 17:03

Don't like it for either! Just don't like Avery in general. Doesn't sound like a name.. More like an animal habitat.

Or a last name! I think of James Avery (Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince!)

It's unisex, probably edging a bit more to the girl name category right now.

The US secretary of State (under Eisenhower) John Foster Dulles named his son Avery. It's an old fashioned WASP name imo, in the sense that it conveys a feeling of old east coast American money.

(Though Avery Dulles converted to Catholicism and took holy orders, eventually becoming a Cardinal).

mathanxiety · 08/02/2018 18:38

(I like it for a boy, fwiw).

MikeUniformMike · 08/02/2018 18:38

Avery scales, avery labels. Avas in every class.
People mispronounce aviary as avery.
A very ...

Yuk.

villainousbroodmare · 08/02/2018 18:39

I really like it. Aubrey is very stuffy by comparison imo.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/02/2018 19:24

I like it for a girl, it's pretty !

Valerrie · 08/02/2018 19:27

I've taught a couple recently and they've all been girls.

SpottyBrolly · 08/02/2018 20:02

It's not to my taste but I like the meaning and think it works well as a boy's name.
