Could I please ask your opinions on the name Peter? It's a family name that would be nice to use and is growing on me, but I think it is a little unusual in the sense that it's not very common anymore.

I like it and we considered it for ds (who is now 10 days oldSmile).

I think it’s due a revival. I’ve seen a few people mentioning it on here lately.

CandyYumYum · 03/02/2018 12:23

What is a 'try hard' name?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/02/2018 12:28

Try hard name = Ptolemy

Fozzleyplum · 03/02/2018 12:29

A name that is over- complicated or consciously trendy or aspirational. Lots of Ptolomies, Hugos, etc at the moment.

Fozzleyplum · 03/02/2018 12:30

Cross post, Greatduck! Lots of thoze types of name on here, and I think they will date badly.

MrsBertBibby · 03/02/2018 12:34

My first boyfriend was a Peter. He was fine.

zeeboo · 03/02/2018 13:25

My husband is a Peter. I'm not a huge fan to be honest, it just doesn't 'say anything' to me. Blah and there are loads of them. My daughter has two in her year 3 class so it's getting common.

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2018 13:29

Love it.

MinnieMousse · 03/02/2018 13:34

I like it. I taught a little boy called Peter a couple of years ago.

TheCatsPaws · 03/02/2018 13:35

Peter is lovely.

GummyGoddess · 03/02/2018 13:40

I don't particularly like it. As zeeboo said, it doesn't say anything to me and is a bit bland.

caoraich · 03/02/2018 13:42

It's lovely. I know a baby peter and a 10 year old peter who goes by "Pete"

Namechangeuser · 03/02/2018 13:42

Thank you everyone.

It seems that most people like it which is great to hear, and those that don't simply find it to be boring and dull.

I fall into the camp of baby names where boring or dull is seen as a positive. We love normal :)

It's a perfectly fine boys name. I think Pete is a nice nickname and would assume that's what he'd be called most of the time.

villainousbroodmare · 03/02/2018 14:32

It's like Martin or Paul, utterly, utterly dull but fine.

lettuceWrap · 03/02/2018 17:02

Rather than “dull”, I think traditional/biblical names such as Adam, Andrew, David, Peter, Paul, Mathew, Michael, Thomas etc are names that convey/feel safe, dependable, reliable... not out of place in any class or social setting, or anywhere in the world of work... the same can’t be said for some of the younique names kids are being saddled these days!

AuntieStella · 03/02/2018 17:05

I think it's lovely

(And that they'll find out some stage in secondary school that it's French for 'to fart' makes it even better!)

RavenWings · 03/02/2018 17:06

Love it. Very different to the hordes of Ollie/Albert/Noah/Finn etc names. It might be dull to older generations but unusual among the younger.

PhuntSox · 03/02/2018 17:10

Its making a come back, there have been a few characters with the name eg Fringe.

I also like Patrick, Andrew, Susan and Helen. All due a come back.

liquidrevolution · 03/02/2018 17:15

I know a 3 yr old Peter. Lovely boy and lovely name.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/02/2018 17:42

Peter is a good name, like Andrew, David and Jonathan.

CandyYumYum · 03/02/2018 17:46

Oh no. Jonathans are terrible people. All of them.

CandyYumYum · 03/02/2018 17:46

Davids are generally dependable. Although Daves can sometimes be a bit shady.

AuntieStella · 03/02/2018 17:49

Actually, I think it was a character with the name which has put it out of use in the last couple of decades

Horrid Henry's brother Perfect Peter.

MissMoodyMoo · 03/02/2018 17:51

I think with the new peter rabbit film it's going to become quite popular
