Not long to go- is Indigo too out there?

Hi all, first thread I've ever set up so please forgive any errors. Baby is due in the next few week and I've still no clear idea for names. We haven't found out if it's a boy or girl so have twice the name options!

I like unusual names (I.e. only one in class or school) but don't want to be thought completely out there and crazy with it.

What are your thoughts on Indigo (Nn Indi) for either a girl or boy?

OP posts:

I like it.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/02/2018 09:34

I quite like it actually. Or what about Inigo instead.

PenelopePickle · 03/02/2018 09:34

I like it but I’d think it was a girls name if I saw it on a class list. Possibly because I’ve only known female Indi’s

ferrier · 03/02/2018 09:36

I like it too. I don't think I'd know if it was boy or girl. Also agree that Inigo for a boy is nice.

NC4now · 03/02/2018 09:37

I used to know a guy called Indigo, 20 odd years ago. Hippy parents. It really suited him and I always thought he had the coolest name ever.
I’ve never met another.

NannyR · 03/02/2018 09:37

Indigo refers to a certain type of child in New age, hippy circles wiki.
It's a nice name though, no more weird than other colour names like Amber, Scarlett.

TheCatsPaws · 03/02/2018 09:39

I think it’s a great name OP.

DilysMoon · 03/02/2018 09:39

I like it, there's an Indigo at DD's preschool, girl.

Dozer · 03/02/2018 09:41

Dislike it, sounds hippyish, and isn’t it supposedly used to refer to “spirited” DC or something in new-agey woo?

Wasn’t unusual in London when lived there.

IggyAce · 03/02/2018 09:42

I like it, I work in a school with a wide mix of names and haven't come across an Indigo.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 03/02/2018 09:42

I don't think it's too bad....

BUT if I saw the name, I'd assume 'indigo child', and would be very Hmm. Which I know is wrong - but wouldn't stop me thinking it.

However, I don't think that many people have heard of the indigo child outside of Mumsnet. Which means it's fine.

In short, I'm sitting on the fence.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 03/02/2018 09:45

I've just looked at the NannyR's link. I do like the fact that Wikepedia dismisses the indigo child as a"pseudoscientific New Age" concept.

eggofmantumbi · 03/02/2018 10:00

I taught a bit canned Indigo a while ago. Everyone called him Indie. There's much more 'out there' so as long as you don't mind the 'that's unusual' comments then go for it.
If I see it on a register I'd not assume either gender.

GlorianaBanana · 03/02/2018 10:04

I know a toddler girl called Indigo. It suits her. I think it's one of the better and more refreshing 'alternative' names (all boys seem to be River and girls Luna in that category)

WetWipeofWonder · 03/02/2018 10:07

I love it. I'd never be brave enough to use it but I love it. How about Indira as an alternative?

FancyNewBeesly · 03/02/2018 11:09

Even though it ends in o, I prefer it for a girl to be honest. I personally feel you have a lot more freedom with girls names to use something a little more unusual - I know a few boys with more unusual names and people seem to have more of an issue with it.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 03/02/2018 11:12

Love.

SpottyBrolly · 03/02/2018 11:17

It's nice I know a little boy Indigo ego goes by Indi. TBH thigh if you want a name that is very unusual you're probably better of going for Derek, Norris or Shirley. I don't know of any children with those names.

daisypond · 03/02/2018 11:20

I think it's fine. Maybe the boy's name Inigo helps it.

MistyMeadow · 03/02/2018 11:21

Yes love it!

chaser90210 · 03/02/2018 11:25

Love it! I would assume a girl though

ChocolateCrunch · 03/02/2018 11:46

Love it, as well as Inigo, Indiana and India

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 03/02/2018 12:25

I love it but it is very trendy especially for girls. One of those names that's come from nothing and headed rapidly up the charts and is still on the rise.

Elementtree · 03/02/2018 12:28

Whenever I've seen 'indigo children' it seems to be a gentler term to the more obvious 'proto-psychopath'. Which is a shame because Indigo would be a cool name.

RoryAndLogan · 03/02/2018 12:31

I love it.

I think it's the perfect balance of not the beyond boring and common Olivia/Emily/Mae and the really ridiculous unpronounceable names.
