DH wants Eleanor. I don't love it.
I love Norah.
He says put Eleanor on birth certificate but just go by Norah.
Norah seems too different to be a shortening of Eleanor to me.
Elle, Ellie seem the normal shortenings.

Eleanor sounds posh, and we are not!
And I don't feel like it goes with DS's name - Elijah.
And he gets shortened to Eli by some people already and he's only 3, in a few years he'll probably always be an Eli.
Will she get shortened to Ellie? I hate Ellie. We can't have an Eli and an Ellie surely? It's almost the same name!

Wwyd?

And is it totally confusing for dc to have two names? So on everything formal it would be Eleanor yet she won't recognise it. At school for example?

Eleanora?

GlitteryFluff · 30/01/2018 23:01

Oh god no!

Btw I can’t see anything wrong with Norah as a nn for Eleanor. It’s a beautiful underused name.

Bringmewineandcake · 30/01/2018 23:04

It’s a real name! Derived from the Greek for light.

Elijah and Norah, perfect

MrsJayy · 30/01/2018 23:05

Of course you can have Nora as a nick name personally I prefer Eleanor it really is a nicer (not posh) name

Frontstep · 30/01/2018 23:08

I think if you call her Nora day to day, that’ll stick, and it’ll be the name she knows.
Adding the ‘h’ is maybe a bit odd if it’s a shortening of Eleanor that doesn’t have an ‘h’?
My DD2 is known by everyone by a shortened form of her name that we hadn’t really intended - just because there were two with the same name in her class and they had to differentiate somehow. Better to have your chosen nn sorted before school

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 23:12

Nora Batty. Don't.

Eleanor is popular and classic.

MrsJayy · 30/01/2018 23:14

Nobody under 40 knows who nora batty is Grin

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 23:14

And Bloody Nora! or Flamin' Nora.
Eleanor and Elijah are slightly matchy matchy.

walkingdowntheboulevard · 30/01/2018 23:15

Eleanorah = Norah, so,she could be Ellie or Norah?

iggleypiggly · 30/01/2018 23:17

Name her Nora or Eleanor and then use nn Nora, whatever nn you choose will tend to stick. If you love Nora though just go with that...

GlitteryFluff · 30/01/2018 23:24

We're late 20's and have no idea who Nora batty is, just googled (a few older family members mentioned her) but surely that will fade as her generation won't know of her ?

I don't like any other variations of Eleanor.

I love Norah. But don't like Nora at all.

It's so hard!

myrtleWilson · 30/01/2018 23:28

My niece is Norah and her name is perfect - she suits it and no-one has ever mentioned Nora Batty!!

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 23:30

If you are going to call her Norah and it's much better with the h. There is no point in putting Eleanor on the BC. The names have different meanings.
Norah means Honour, Eleanor means shining light, I think.

If you have a free moment, do a search for Nora Batty. Grin

RideOn · 30/01/2018 23:34

Eleanor

But one of my 4 dcs has a name I don’t love (went with DH choice) and 5 years later I still regret it a little, so IME if your DH is swayable choose Norah!

Joeybee · 30/01/2018 23:35

Don't go with Eleanor if you're not happy with it. Eleanor is more likely to get shortened to El/Ellie than to Norah. So maybe go back to the drawing board and start again. You both have to like the name, don't go with something to please him if you don't feel confident. I think Norah is a beautiful name.

LizzieSiddal · 30/01/2018 23:36

There’s no way I’d put Eleanor on her birth certificate if I had a son whose nn is Eli. Because some family members (including your dh) will call her Eleanor which will then be shortened to Ellie.

Call her Norah, it’s beautiful.

LizzieSiddal · 30/01/2018 23:37

Norah Jones is a who I associate Norah with, not Nora Batty and I’m 52!

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 23:38

Could you use Eleanor as a middle name?
Norah Eleanor Fluff sounds and looks fine to me

GlitteryFluff · 31/01/2018 00:06

DH is trying to compromise with having Norah on bc but going by Eleanor. I hope he's joking.Grin

Norah Jones is who I think of too.

Middle name is already decided, a family name from my side.

DS's name was put forward by DH and that's what we went with even though it wasn't my fave, but I liked it, and his middle name is a family name from dh's side.

So I think I'm due to get my way this time?

I'm liking the few posters who think go for just Norah. Can some more of you come along please?

dotdotdotmustdash · 31/01/2018 00:12

Honora/Honoria on the BC?

I am an oldie who thinks Batty when I hear Norah though! Not a pretty thought...

SuperBeagle · 31/01/2018 01:34

Bloody Nora etc. comes to mind for me too.

Prefer Eleanor. But no reason Nora can't be short for Eleanor.

ChocolateCrunch · 31/01/2018 02:29

I would go for Norah. Eleanor is so popular, and I think she will become Ellie in time, so as you say, you could have Eli and Ellie.

Tunic · 31/01/2018 06:45

I don’t have a preference for either but Eleanor is not posh, there are Eleanors from all walks of life (a good thing).
