DH wants Eleanor. I don't love it.
I love Norah.
He says put Eleanor on birth certificate but just go by Norah.
Norah seems too different to be a shortening of Eleanor to me.
Elle, Ellie seem the normal shortenings.

Eleanor sounds posh, and we are not!
And I don't feel like it goes with DS's name - Elijah.
And he gets shortened to Eli by some people already and he's only 3, in a few years he'll probably always be an Eli.
Will she get shortened to Ellie? I hate Ellie. We can't have an Eli and an Ellie surely? It's almost the same name!

Wwyd?

Yes, you should have your way this time. Dh has his last time so it’s your turn.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 31/01/2018 08:07

Eleanor is beautiful.Nora is indeed a shortening.

PandaCat · 31/01/2018 08:43

I much prefer Eleanor, I find Norah sounds a bit meh. It can be used as a nn though since Ele-a-NOR. Although I wouldn't add the H, just Nora.

Each to their own though, don't settle for Eleanor if you really don't like it.

thisismadness77 · 31/01/2018 08:49

Norah is gorgeous. Do you like Nova? Or Neve?

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 31/01/2018 08:54

Eleanor is the much, much more durable name. And it's not 'posh'!

If you love Norah but dislike Nora, you need to be aware that calling her Norah will let you and her in for a lifetime of her being spelled Nora.

And it's not a foregone conclusion that she will be called Ellie. You can stop that happening within your family/friends (explaining about your son's name), and whether her friends call her it or not doesn't matter, as she will rarely be with her brother at the same time.

Dontrocktheboat · 31/01/2018 08:58

What about Leonora?

Prefer Norah to Eleanor personally and agree Nora batty will be a fading memory! Also agree can't have Ellie and Eli.

Congratulations!

halcyondays · 31/01/2018 09:04

I've noticed quite a lot of people are known by a name which is quite different from their "official" name on their birth certificate. Forms often ask for the name you are known by because of this. Also people who go by their middle name. So I don't think it would be too confusing.
But Eli and Ellie would be a bit silly.

NameChange30 · 31/01/2018 09:10

What was your favourite for your DS? (Not relevant but I’m curious!)

Can you delay the appointment and find a different name that both of you agree on?

I wouldn’t call my DD Eleanor if I already had a DS called Elijah. Too similar.

If you love Norah, it should be Norah on the birth certificate, but only if your DH agrees.

MakkaPakkasMate · 31/01/2018 09:12

Elinor/Eleanor nn Norah is perfectly fine! I know an Elinor that goes by Nell too. I think Eleanor nn Norah is the best of both worlds x

AntiHop · 31/01/2018 09:12

If you shorten your ds's name to eli already, don't call your dd Eleanor. I think Nora is a great name.

What about isabella?

daisypond · 31/01/2018 12:08

Eleanor with a nickname of Nora is fine. I don't see why you'd put an H on the end, though. Eleanor is a nice "proper" name, whereas I do immediately think of Nora Batty for Nora - which doesn't seem like a proper name to me. I also think Eleanor and Elijah are odd together, as they start with the same two letters, though they're both very different sorts of names.

GlitteryFluff · 31/01/2018 12:41

Thanks for opinions.
We've gone with Norah. DH was ok with it, as we've been calling her Norah since she was born anyway so it felt like her name already.
I just could not have an Eli and Ellie in a few years. Just does not work.
Thanks again.
