Lovely name a little unusual but that shouldn't put you off, you might like Emerald, sapphire and Opel.

Meemzinha · 30/01/2018 18:30

Go for it!! Might seem odd to some but it's a lovely word and name Smile

RavenWings · 30/01/2018 18:30

I love it in theory but I'm not sure it belongs on an actual person, aside from being a stripper stage name. It'd be a beautiful middle name, though.

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 18:30

Opal even, or Pearl, Beryl, Garnet, Jade, Amber...
I like Amberlyn.

Amethyst is a nice stone but have you thought of possible short forms or nn as they are known on here?

Ohyesiam · 30/01/2018 18:31

Very pretty.
You could have Misty for short.

Meemzinha · 30/01/2018 18:31

Definitely not a stripper name!!! Wouldn't worry about that...

AuntieStella · 30/01/2018 18:33

I like it

(Isn't Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford's DGD called that? Pretty sure it's the only time I've come across it)

Amy is another possible nn (it was in the novels)

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 18:51

Misty is rather nice.

EmpireVille · 30/01/2018 18:57

I knew somebody with a baby Emerald. Her sister was Christabel!

Thistlebelle · 30/01/2018 18:59

I would not personally want to be called Amethyst.

Or Emerald. Or Saphhire.

The stones are pretty but cold and hard. That doesn’t seem like a good association to me.

EmpireVille · 30/01/2018 19:05

When I was naming mine, I used to say out loud "Hello, I'm X" and imagine introducing myself to people. If it made me wince, I ditched it I matter how much I liked the idea of the name.

Would you like to say "Hello, I'm Amethyst"?

daisypond · 30/01/2018 19:15

I think it's a name that might be hard to live with - she might end up shortening it to Amy, which is almost its poplar opposite in blandness.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 30/01/2018 19:17

I thought stripper too.

MsGameandWatching · 30/01/2018 19:22

I think it's pretty.

she might end up shortening it to Amy

Or she might really love it.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 30/01/2018 19:23

I adore Pearl!

CougheeBean · 30/01/2018 19:23

I love it, very pretty. I think Amy as a nn is lovely too.

1DAD2KIDS · 30/01/2018 19:23

Personally on an everyday practical level it doesnt really roll of the tongue very well and would be a complete pain the anyone with a speech impediment.

liquidrevolution · 30/01/2018 19:26

Princess Amy in 'The ordinary princess' is an amethyst!

I bloody love that book. Nice name too. Prefer Amy to misty though.

Wolfiefan · 30/01/2018 19:27

Don't like it. Not really a "name". A pain to spell and doesn't flow well. I would hate to have such a youneeq name.

silkpyjamasallday · 30/01/2018 19:32

As a hippieish middle name fine, but not as a first name imo.

ArsenalsPlayingAtHome · 30/01/2018 19:37

would be a complete pain for anyone with a speech impediment

I think it's vile, but if your DD is going to be an actress/artist/singer/musician then great....not so great if she wants to work in an industry where a certain level of professionalism and conformity is required.

MorningstarMoon · 30/01/2018 19:41

Very pretty. Though now someone has mentioned a stripper stage name Blush

SuperBeagle · 30/01/2018 19:50

Another one who really wouldn't like to be called Amethyst.

CorianderSnell · 30/01/2018 19:51

I struggle a bit with the ‘th’ then ‘st’ sounds but I like the association and think it sounds nice.

Other ideas to consider -

Damaris - similar-ish sound, also unusual
Peridot - pretty gemstone name
Magenta - going with the purple theme and turning it pink...

Elfyn · 30/01/2018 19:59

Don’t like it. It’s a bit fussy for me, and I agree that it would be embarrassing/a pain to have to introduce yourself as that.
