Hello! Due soon with DC2 - we already have a Bethan and I need some ideas for other Welsh names! I quite like Elin for a girl but boys I have no idea.... would love some inspiration!

Are you Welsh? Are you looking for names English (or other nationality) people could easily pronounce?

beela · 29/01/2018 18:55

I wanted Emlyn or Idris for dc2, but she turned out to be a girl.

BikeRunSki · 29/01/2018 18:55

Elin is one of my favourite names in the entire world. I’m not Welsh, but went to university there, and have family in West Wales.

I like Gethin and Rhodri. No idea whether they are young/trendy/old manly though.

My kids have all got proper unpronounceable Welsh names, because they are the best names in the world. And we've never lived in Wales we're right in the middle of England

isitwinetimeyet16 · 29/01/2018 20:40

Love these! Thanks so much. I’m not Welsh, my husband is but we don’t live in Wales so need something not too out-there. Emlyn is brilliant for a boy!

Is Gwenlli a real name? I know a Gwenllïan.

I'd go for a name that is easy to say and spell if you are English. Bryn, Huw, Idris, etc

DianaBlythe · 29/01/2018 22:04

Emyr or Haydn might fit your boys’ bill as well.

Elin is gorgeous of course.

WellTidy · 29/01/2018 22:07

Gareth
Aled
Wyn
Rhys
Eiros

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2018 22:20

Eiros is spelt Euros.
Aled is good.

YassQueen · 29/01/2018 23:20

Is Gwenlli a real name?

Yes.

Heratnumber7 · 29/01/2018 23:23

Caradog
Meredydd
Huw
Ieuan
Gareth
Taliesin
Iolo
Llewellyn

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2018 23:46

It sounds a bit made up. I'm not keen on Gwen-, Gwyn- or -wyn and -wen names. I hate when names get the wrong suffix like Bronwyn or Olwyn. They're just wrong. They're Bronwen and Olwen, both lovely.

PiecesOfHate · 30/01/2018 10:54

Ceinwen
Rhian
Rhiannon
Lowri

Dylan
Rhodri
Owen
Owain
Llewyn

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 12:21

I'll probably get flamed but I would avoid names with:
Rh, ngh
ei, eu ,ew
ia
Ae, Au
uw
yw
Ge, Gi
Ce, Ci
Ch
Ll
F
Dd
letter combinations as they tend not to travel. Names ending in -an tend to sound like -un etc. Try the names out to see if they are wet with an WTF attitude or if they get mangled. If you are ok with Elin pronounced as ELL-in then go for it.
(FWIW the welsh pronunciation of Elin is ELL-in with the I sounding like the i in the english word big)

WellTidy · 30/01/2018 13:29

I love Catrin and Aled. Love love love. Also love Carys in a big way.

llangennith · 30/01/2018 13:37

I live in Wales, not Welsh speaking, but like all Welsh people I know the pronunciation ‘rules’. So all those names are easy for me to pronounce and spell. Most English people wouldn’t have a clue with some of the names. Stick to the straightforward Welsh names.

Lookingtothehighlands · 30/01/2018 13:41

My all time favourite Welsh boys names are Llyr and Llew, but they will be horribly mangled and mispronounced outside Wales.

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 13:53

I like Catrin and Aled. Carys would be a 50+ yr old welsh speaker.
I like LlÅ·r and Llew too but not sure if they would work in England.
Some of the welsh names get mangled by non-welsh speaking welsh folk too and some sound a bit different depending on location.

LouiseBrooks · 30/01/2018 14:01

Most English people wouldn’t have a clue with some of the names.

Well perhaps they could learn? Admittedly most English people seem incapable of pronouncing LL properly (I have English cousins and grew up mostly in England and most people say, for example, Loo or - even worse - Clue for Llew) but many of those mentioned on this thread are not especially difficult and if told once how to pronounce them shouldn't prove much of an issue.

Choose the name YOU like.

Heartofglass12345 · 30/01/2018 14:34

I like Eira for a girl but had 2 boys
I like Osian, Harri, Ellis (or Elis)
