Help with ‘Jack’ themed names

Pansy0926 · 29/01/2018 18:44

DH is obsessed with calling our baby boy Jack, but for reasons I can’t explain, I HATE it. Probably because I’ve had to explain myself so many times, and come up with different reasons because he won’t leave it alone. Doesn’t help it has associations with a childhood bully of mine.

I kind of want to give in just to keep the peace but I think we should BOTH love our child’s name, and it’s not fair for me to give in.

Are there any names with ‘Jack’ in them that we can compromise with?

For instance, like Jackson, Jake and Jacob? I can’t think of any others. Unusual or common, any suggestions appreciated.

If you really don't like it. You need to tell him and put your foot down.
You've both got to agree to it.

peachypips · 29/01/2018 18:49

Zach?

DianaBlythe · 29/01/2018 18:56

Jack was traditionally a nickname for John. You could go John or Jonathan.

I’ve seen a couple of Jaxons lately.

Jackson, Jake and Jacob you’ve already said.

Joseph/Joe, Jolyon, Jason, Julian?

Zack/Zac/Zak
Zachary, Zachariah, Zacharias

I’m answering your question as you’ve posted it but if you really don’t like Jack then it might be the wrong question!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/01/2018 18:59

I don't know how you can compromise when you don't want the word Jack in his name? Eg John doesn't sound anything like Jack so won't make your DH happy and unless you love John it won't make you happy either.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/01/2018 19:01

Does your husband know the reason why you don't want this name. I think he's being majorly insensitive if he does

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/01/2018 19:08

Jaxon
Jaques

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2018 19:11

If you don't like Jack then put your foot down. Jackson or something won't do.

Zac is lovely.

daisypond · 29/01/2018 19:21

It can be used as a nickname for James. Jago? But I think you need to think again, really.

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2018 20:06

Jacques is French for James or Jacob.
If you want to put your DH off the name, tell him to look up 'jack off'.
It's overused as a name and has some unattractive associations like Jack the lad and Jack the Ripper.

Pansy0926 · 29/01/2018 21:04

To be honest the fact is that I just dont like the name, it’s less to do with the bully, but tbh I have never met a nice Jack, though I’m certain they exist. I just can’t imagine looking down at my sweet baby boy and thinking ‘Jack’. I don’t like that it sounds like a nick name, that it doesn’t have a meaningfulness that the rest of our list has...it makes me cringe to think of my baby being called that, it’s along the lines of Tom or Richard...they seem like such generic names, like Smith as a surname.

I do like Zack but unfortunately it’s my brothers name so it would feel strange...especially as he is eight so he’d probably take the view we were ‘stealing’ his name.

No need to worry, I will not agree to a name I don’t like, it’s just DH is always going on about it and I’m starting to wonder if I’m being unreasonable.

I don’t mind names with Jack in them, just the ones I came up with don’t particularly appeal either.

Thanks for the ideas though.

How about Barnaby or Max?

BabloHoney · 29/01/2018 21:18

Jack used to be a nickname for John... Jonny?

mumgointhroughtorture · 29/01/2018 21:26

I have a 13 year old Jack and he's a lovely lad with a heart of gold although he was a little monkey growing up lol . I absolutely adore the name and even now I've never regretted it but everyone likes different names.

Could you give him a middle name which you could use instead of calling him Jack.

How about Jake , very similar without being Jack.

Baubletrouble43 · 29/01/2018 21:28

Tell him you once shagged a bloke called Jack. He'll go off it then Grin

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2018 21:39

Genius Bauble.

SleepDeprived4 · 29/01/2018 21:47

Jax Jaxx Jackz Jacks

Meaning; God has been gracious; has shown favour.

In my personal opinion this name is strong like Jack yet subtle and not so arachaic as John etc. Easy enough for when the child learns to write his name, he’ll be spelling it with a breeze, yet still appropriate once he’s an adult, it’s not like some of the names people call their child where you think “gosh did they not think how awkward it would sound to call them that when they’re older” lol. Also still has the Jack to keep the wining at bay but with your own little twist.

WetWipeofWonder · 29/01/2018 22:03

Jacobi "Jac"?

Dolwar · 29/01/2018 22:16

Jackson/Jaxon.............DON'T DO IT!!

Smoliver · 29/01/2018 23:41

Jack is diminutive of John, what about that name? Also, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of names do you like? Might help to come up with some more ideas.

Other names that sound similar to Jack:
James - same first 2 letters
Isaac - similar sounding and lovely meaning, which is "laughter"
Luke - another short, kind of similar sounding name
Hank - is a nickname for Henry, so you could use Henry as a full name here if that suits you better.
Frank
Max

Itchytights · 29/01/2018 23:49

I have a Jack. He is beautiful and sweet and everyone adores him.

Please don’t generalise the name and presume all Jacks are little terrors.

That’s your opinion only and yours alone.

Speedy85 · 30/01/2018 07:49

I’d second Isaac if you like Zach but can’t use it.

MammieBear · 30/01/2018 10:23

As you've said don't go for a name you can't stand, if he likes nn type names how about names like Jesse, Albie, Scott, Matteo, Johnny - can give you Jack as it is originally for John anyway, or there is names like you have requested that contain it the best one I can think of is Jackobi, you could always have Kobi as well from that one, look it up on Nameberrydotcom. Good luck

BlahBoobidyBaya · 01/02/2018 19:26

I know a Giacomo who is known as Jack

BlackberryandNettle · 01/02/2018 19:33

Jonathan (nn Jack), Jacob, Jocoby?Zachary/Zack sounds similar but is way less popular

Ickyockycocky · 01/02/2018 19:37

Jonah
