What's the consensus on the name Ernest/Ernie?

I'm almost 8m preg and all through my pregnancy my partner and I have struggled to find a name we both liked.
In the end we picked 3 names each. I chose one of his (James) and he chose one of my choices (Ernest - after my grandad x)
We then played best of three games of pool to decide the name.
I won 2-0 😂 So Ernie it is, with James as a second name.
But now I'm not even sure I'm 100% on Ernest!
I'm hoping when I look into my baby's gorgeous newborn face that will help decide 😀

Part of the appeal of Ernie for me as a professional childcarer for 18yrs is I've never come across a little Ernest.
What do others think?

Ernest I suppose fits in with the whole Edwardian thing that seems to be all the rage. I wouldn't be a fan but Ernest is at least better than Ernie. Ernie is a bit comical.

Plumes · 26/01/2018 15:52

James is a much better option though imo.

Hillbillyhotel · 26/01/2018 15:53

I love it!

EnglishRose1320 · 26/01/2018 15:54

I know an Ernie/Ernest he's 3. Not gonna lie, I really didn't like the name, it's grown on me because he's a lovely boy but I would never pick it and I'd probably only say it's okay now.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 26/01/2018 15:56

Ernie gives me The fastest milkman in the west as an earworm.

James Ernest?

glitterbiscuits · 26/01/2018 16:09

I’ve never met an Ernest but every James I have ever met is naughty!

Was there a name in 3rd place?

alwaysonadiet1 · 26/01/2018 16:11

Ernie - Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street!

Earnest/Ernest - The Importance of Being Earnest. Great name!

TheShapeofYou · 26/01/2018 16:14

I know of a 3yo Ernest, known as Ernie, And a 2yo called Ernest (never shortened or changed).

Although they are beautiful boys, I hate their names (but a family member has it as his middle name and always hated it, so guess it has negative connotations).

Pinky333777 · 26/01/2018 16:29

It's not a name I'd usually go for. It's only because of sentimental reasons i chose it. That and the fact my partner didn't vito it like he did my real favs
Vinnie, Ellis, Caleb, Xade, Matteo,Joey, Emilio, Freddy among others.
I said an outright no to a lot of his too, Henry, Harry,Jim,Arthur. I find them boring 😀

Have you got any other children? Would Ernest "go" with them? Or if this is your first, and we're thinking of more in the future, then would you be happy with choosing another old fashioned traditional name? (It matters to me, maybe not you!).

DramaAlpaca · 26/01/2018 16:34

I'm sorry OP, I think it's absolutely horrible. There are much nicer old-fashioned names.

Ernie was also the Fastest Milkman in the West according to the Benny Hill song, and it has a very rude version so we won't go there

NameChangedForThisQ · 26/01/2018 16:36

I love Ernest and Ernie. Lovely, cute and age quite well. A bit like Alfie Archie and the other cutesy old folk names but original. Love it. Put James as middle name and he can always use later if he doesn't like Ernie. You can also call him Jamie if you wanted.

FfionFlorist · 26/01/2018 16:41

James is a much better name. But I love the idea of playing pool as a decider, very cool and impressive with an 8 month bump op.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/01/2018 16:43

No way. It's as bad as Cedric and Percy!

helpmum2003 · 26/01/2018 16:48

Sorry I don't like it..... I'm not keen on any of yours and also like James!!!

SpottyBrolly · 26/01/2018 16:50

I like Earnest/Ernie. It does make me tink of the Benny Hill song but I don't think that it'll be of relevance to his peers.

dotdotdotmustdash · 26/01/2018 16:52

If your heart isn't in it, don't do it! Go for James as his first name and you can call him little Ernie while he's small and give him the chance to be James when he's older.

OuchBollocks · 26/01/2018 16:52

He said you'll want it pasteurized, cos pasteurized is best. She said Ernie I'll be happy if it comes up to me chest.

Butterymuffin · 26/01/2018 16:56

Fastest milkman in the west

Evelynismycatsformerspyname · 26/01/2018 17:00

I live it, but I'm not sure I'd actually use it... For me it brings to mind first The Importance of Being Earnest and second, as someone else says, the fastest milkman in the west :o

Use Ernst maybe...hmm

MammieBear · 26/01/2018 17:14

It's getting a negative press so thought I'd bring some positivity to your choice Smile

  • It's German and means Serious *It is also a character from the importance of being Ernest *Has a good pedigree of use through history *Cut nickname Ernie to take the grown up edge of while he's little.

I think it's a refreshing choice, don't be put of by people's personal opinion it's your choice.
Good luck 🍀

MammieBear · 26/01/2018 17:15

Cute silly phone

Lancelottie · 26/01/2018 17:17

XxMagpiexX · 26/01/2018 17:21

Plumes · 26/01/2018 17:22
