Elizabeth?

Tell me your thoughts on Elizabeth. DH and I are going around in circles trying to find a name for dd3 (we have fairly traditional names for our other dd's.) DH really likes this name (it was the name of his late mother), I am hoping it will grown on me too (I do quite like Eliza) but I think it is the beth bit that I find a bit grating. Any other suggestions please...I know there are plenty of shortened nicknames for Elizabeth too.

Elizabeth is a fab name, but if you don't like the Beth part go with just Eliza.

SuperBeagle · 26/01/2018 05:27

It's my name.

I have no complaints. I don't know many others (none my age), but everyone knows how to spell and pronounce it. It's classic, feminine, but has less feminine shortenings if you're not a girly girl etc.

I was supposed to be Amelia, and I do prefer that, but I think it's a case of "the grass is greener". I don't think many people love their name, but as far as names goes, Elizabeth is pretty flawless.

BoredOfOldName · 26/01/2018 06:30

It's my name and while I'm not enamoured with the meaning, it often strikes me what a pretty name it is. I really don't dislike it! I tend to be Elizabeth in full, but there's some lovely nicknames if Eliza doesn't stick.

AConvivialHost · 26/01/2018 06:37

We have a 13 month old Elizabeth. When we decided on it, it was the appeal of being able to shorten it to so many different names - Eliza, Lizzie, Beth, Libby. Since day 1 she has only ever been Elizabeth with the occasional Elz - I just can't bring myself to shorten it now Smile.

I don’t think you need to worry about the royal baby being an Elizabeth. They’ve already used it for one of Charlotte’s middle names.

Lavenderdays · 26/01/2018 08:17

Yes, the shortened Libby is nice too.
I don't think the Royals will use Elizabeth if they have a little girl - I think that they would potentially leave that name clear for a future monarch (George?).
The name would match with other dds names who both have classic names. It just doesn't feel daring somehow to use the name (maybe that's a good thing - a lot of misconstruing Geogiana perhaps?) but as others have said, it ticks so many boxes...waiting to see if it grows on me.

Beautiful name it's my friends name and she shortens it down to Libby which I like aswell.

BlackberryandNettle · 26/01/2018 09:37

It's a great choice. Really like the nicknames Eliza, Lizzie and Betty too.

I guess you've considered the other classic names but how about Anna/Sophie/Josephine/Jemima/Florence

mellongoose · 26/01/2018 09:45

You could put Elizabeth on her birth certificate and then let her own nick name evolve. She will grow into her name. Smile

Goldmonday · 26/01/2018 10:12

I think it's a beautiful, classic name. The Italian spelling is beautiful too "Elizabetta" the shortening to Elise is lovely but I would NOT allow anyone to refer to her as "Liz". As pp said it reminds me of coronation street!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/01/2018 11:03

Great name. Prefer Elisabeth though.

areyoubeingserviced · 26/01/2018 11:05

I chose this name for my god daughter.
People always comment about how beautiful it is

janiceyorkshire · 26/01/2018 11:26

I love it......called my daughter Elizabeth after my nan. :-)

Lavenderdays · 26/01/2018 13:17

I had totally overlooked this name until DH mentioned it; he says nothing for weeks whilst I ponder away and then seems to come up with some really good names!

O.K...for all of the Elizabeth fans...which nickname do you prefer (to potentially be used on a day to day basis (perhaps at school)?
Libby?
Eliza?
Betsy?
something else...

Lavenderdays · 26/01/2018 14:21

Also, it seems popular as a middle name rather than a first name - my dd1 has it as a middle name for those who have used it as a middle name why didn't it quite make it as a first name (what were your preferences?)

SparkyBlue · 26/01/2018 14:29

It's a really beautiful name and it's timeless

daisypond · 26/01/2018 14:33

I love Elizabeth. You could consider Elspeth, Lisbeth, Elise, Elsie, Bettina, Elsa, etc, etc. I'm not so keen on Libby myself - it sounds like Lippy.

Lavenderdays · 26/01/2018 14:36

I think my favourite nicknames are Eliza and Betsy.

Chinesechicken15 · 26/01/2018 14:44

I have one- she's Betsy now but plenty of options as she grows up if she wants to use Elizabeth, Beth etc.

WetWipeofWonder · 26/01/2018 17:39

We have an Elizabeth and I love her name. She is called Eliza and Ellie as nicknames.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/01/2018 17:41

I love Libby.

Lavenderdays · 26/01/2018 19:46

It's growing on me...just like my bump!
DH and I are disagreeing on nick names...we will have to come to a compromise!

And definitely don't like Liz as a shortened name (sorry any Liz's out there). It is dd1's middle name - what makes it preferential for a middle but not a first name do you think?

OP posts:
Emilybrontescorsett · 27/01/2018 11:11

It's a lovely name but if you don't love it then don't use it.
