Pronounced Taw-rin and Cal (both Gaelic, we are Scottish) and Coen pronounced as you would probably expect.

I should add, these are for a boy.

Torin

SuperBeagle · 24/01/2018 20:58

Torin.

Faintlinesquints · 24/01/2018 21:00

Torin's a lovely name! Cael will be mispronounced often I think, and not keen on Coen, although I know one little boy with it spelled Cohen.

SpottyBrolly · 24/01/2018 21:01

Torin

Plumes · 24/01/2018 21:05

From reading on MN I discovered that Coen/Cohen as a baby name is culturally insensitive to Jewish people as Cohen is a religious title in the Jewish faith.

I prefer Torin to Cael. I'm assuming Cael sounds identical to those horrible greens that are suddenly everywhere, kale.

Chocolateyescakeyes · 24/01/2018 21:10

Plumes it's pronounced Cal. The Jewish connection wouldn't bother me as it's a different spelling. Thanks for the feedback so far, keep them coming!

But it might bother Jewish people?

Okay Cal is certainly better pronunciation than kale.

ChocolateCrunch · 24/01/2018 21:14

Torin

Chocolateyescakeyes · 24/01/2018 21:15

I am led to believe that it would not offend the majority of Jewish people.

Whatever you say!

TatianaLarina · 24/01/2018 21:27

By whom? It would offend some of the Jewish people I know.

It’s culturally insensitive.

TatianaLarina · 24/01/2018 21:28

If you’re both Scottish with choose a Jewish derived name anyway?

I much prefer Cael.

TallulahBetty · 24/01/2018 21:30

Isn't Cohen a Jewish surname? Why would it be offensive to use it as a first name?

Plumes · 24/01/2018 21:31

Google it.

Wolfiefan · 24/01/2018 21:33

I really like Torin. Lovely.

weebarra · 24/01/2018 21:33

Torin. Love it, am Scottish too.

Mulch · 24/01/2018 21:34

I love all your choices but torin is my favorite

TatianaLarina · 24/01/2018 21:35

Cohen means priest.

SuperBeagle · 24/01/2018 21:35

Isn't Cohen a Jewish surname? Why would it be offensive to use it as a first name?

It's a title as much as it is a surname. It's the equivalent of calling someone Priest.

Mulch · 24/01/2018 21:36

Also to pitch in on the Cohen debate, previous thread a few Jewish people pipped up and said it was more silly to them not so much offensive. On par with calling your child priest.

TatianaLarina · 24/01/2018 21:37

Snap..there are so many stunning Scottish boys names, seems a bit of an odd choice.

I love Sholto and Ossian, Fingal..

ScreamingValenta · 24/01/2018 21:40

Cael

Chocolateyescakeyes · 24/01/2018 21:41

Coen has a totally different derivation than Cohen.
