Cillian

I adore the name Cillian but wondered if I can really use it when firstly, we aren’t Irish and secondly, it’s got the word “Kill” in it (bit strange?) but the biggest issue of all is that our surname also starts with C and has double L in it - think the same surname as a popular vampire book series! What does everyone think? Boys names are hard!

I think it's a gorgeous name, but not sure it will go with your surname.

Or maybye it will. It sounds a bit like a character from a bookSmile

Cillian Collins? Young's twister I'm afraid!

SwinginFromTheChandelier · 20/01/2018 09:56

Tongue

boosterrooster · 20/01/2018 11:53

Guessing your surname is Collins?! If so then it might be a bit much. Just thinking of things like the roll call at school and the name being called out over an intercom.

I know lots of Cillians and never thought anything of the word "kill" being in the name until you mentioned it but it's popular where I live so I guess I'm used to it.

I'm having same issue with my girls name, it sounds too similar to our surname, such a pity as I love it!

isthismummy · 20/01/2018 12:40

I think the ops surname might be Cullen.

Lules · 20/01/2018 12:44

I love it and almost called my son it but I couldn’t get past that I would be shouting ‘kill’ at toddler groups.

MikeUniformMike · 20/01/2018 12:45

Makes me think of Cillit Bang or Gillian. Avoid.

squoosh · 20/01/2018 13:23

Cillian is a great name but it doesn't go with your surname.

PuppyMonkey · 20/01/2018 13:25

Cillian Cullen would be a big no from me - sorry.

HappyLollipop · 20/01/2018 13:27

I'm guessing the surname is Cullen like the twilight vampires unfortunately I don't think Cillian goes well with your surname at all.

juneau · 20/01/2018 13:29

I like Cillian (or Killian), and know a couple IRL - both an adult (Irish) and a DC (no Irish blood at all). However, I think with a C + LL in your surname it would be too rhymey.

As for the Irish connection, well yes people might assume you're Irish, but lots of people choose Irish or Gaelic names. I know plenty of Connors, Liams, etc, who don't have an Irish background. Go with a name you like. We have an Irish last name, but no more than a tiny drop of Irish blood on DH's side, so people assume we're Irish, when we're not.

Oddbutnotodd · 20/01/2018 13:30

I thought Cillit Bang too. I would pronounce it as Sillian rather than with a K sound.

TheVanguardSix · 20/01/2018 13:31

I love this name. And I think it sounds great with your surname. Totally works.

OneMoreOne · 20/01/2018 13:32

Love it! Alliteration like that makes people sound like a superhero. In a great way.

midsomermurderess · 20/01/2018 14:50

Cillian means church in Gaelic, if that helps.

midsomermurderess · 20/01/2018 14:50

Sorry, cill means church.

HuskyMcClusky · 20/01/2018 14:53

I don’t like the ‘kill’ sound.

And I’m all for alliteration in names, but Cillian Cullen is far too much.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 20/01/2018 14:53

Lovely and normal Irish name to me.

I don't think Cillian Cullen is unworkably bad.

LadyPug · 20/01/2018 16:17

Thanks guys, yeah Cillian Cullen. Does sound a bit silly I guess. What a shame!

I adore the name Cillian, but I think it does sound a bit much with surname Cullen unfortunately.

harrietm87 · 21/01/2018 13:35

Cullen is an Irish surname, so would suit and Irish first name but then the combo might be a bit much if you're not actually Irish?

Also Cillian Cullen is not good.

If you like Irish names that alliterate then what about Cian, Ciaran, Cuan, Conor, Conall, Cormac, Cathal? Lots of great C names!

LadyPug · 21/01/2018 16:40

Thank you Harriet. Being totally honest, we don’t really like many names for boys, we’ve really struggled. Came across Cillian through Cillian Murphy and fell in love with it typically! Haven’t found anything else we like either! Argh! Why are names so hard?!

What about Niall? I'd look at some other Gaelic names.

needmorespace · 22/01/2018 20:49

I think it sounds great - I would definitely use it - any name you choose is always going to be liked by some people and not by others.
If you like it, use it

Nellyphants · 23/01/2018 19:45

Niall or Oisin?
