Names that can be shortened to Beth or Tess

We are expecting DC3 (a girl) in the summer. We quite like the names Beth and Tess but our surname is short and one syllable so I feel like we need another syllable or two! Any suggestions? We can't use Elizabeth as we already have one in the wider family and not keen on Bethany. Bethan is a maybe. Don't like Theresa.

Therese?

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 19/01/2018 18:56

Sounds like you need to either pick other names or just use the short versions.

Tessa could be an option.

Myneighboursnorlax · 19/01/2018 18:56

Annabeth?

CoffeeChocolateWine · 19/01/2018 19:01

Out of interest do you think Tess would work as a standalone name or is it a nickname?

Another name we like is Tilda but again not sure if it works as a standalone name (and tryig to ignore the fact that it is also a bag of rice!)

I think Beth is great alone. Even with a short surname.

Beth Grey
Beth King
Beth Clark

Short and simple is underrated imo!

rcit · 19/01/2018 19:05

Tess is also fine standalone. Although Beth is better imo.

DarkLikeVader · 19/01/2018 19:06

Tess - Esther, Thomasina,Theodosia, Estella
Beth - Marybeth, Bethel, Bethany, Tabitha (at a push?)

BikeRunSki · 19/01/2018 19:08

I think Beth and Tess both work as standalone names, but Tilda is definitely an abbreviation IME.

TheVanguardSix · 19/01/2018 19:09

Tilda is the diminutive of Matilda/Mathilde

Tess- You could stretch Tess as a diminutive for Thomasina or Tamsen. As was mentioned, Tessa on its own is really lovely.

Beth could be Bethania (DD went to nursery with a Bethania), Lilybeth/Lillibeth

Baubletrouble43 · 19/01/2018 19:11

Hannabeth elsbeth

Baubletrouble43 · 19/01/2018 19:12

Tessabeth? Smile

onemouseplace · 19/01/2018 19:12

At a push, Bess is a shortening for Persephone, so could use Beth instead?

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2018 19:16

Kate Moss, Kim Wilde, Kate Bush... all sound OK.
Tess is fine on it's own but could be short for Teresa, Therese, Tessa. Beth is fine on it's own but could be short for Elizabeth or Bethany.

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2018 19:19

I would not use Bethan. It was very popular in the 1960s and 70s in Wales so sounds very dated. Also, non-Welsh speakers say it as Bethun which isn't nice and it's just short for Elizabeth.

BabloHoney · 19/01/2018 19:29

Tess short for Esther. Also lovely on its own!

grasspigeons · 19/01/2018 19:31

I think they are great on their own

I know MN hate a hyphen but if you want beth or tess they are both good endings

Pemba · 19/01/2018 19:34

Don't see why you can't still use Elizabeth if the other family member doesn't use the short form Beth.

monkeyneedsahug · 19/01/2018 19:40

I'd just use them on their own. She may change her surname at some point anyway if she chooses too on marriage.

Bethia? I know of one. Google says it's a Hebrew name, and more popular in Scotland.

I nominate Esther for Tess. One of my favourite names.

JeansAndANiceTop · 19/01/2018 20:47

I know a Bethia and she goes by Beth. She’s also an absolutely wonderful woman.
And if DS was a DS then he was going to be Esther.

LovelyBranches · 19/01/2018 21:56

I am watching The Good Wife and I love the Elsbeth Tascioni character, love her name to, nn of Els or Beth.

Smoliver · 19/01/2018 23:07

I think either Tess or Beth work well as a stand alone name. If you like them but don't like names that give you those nicknames, then just go with them.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/01/2018 18:16

Tess works as a stand alone name, it's one of my favourites.
Bethany/Beth.

MiniAlphaBravo · 21/01/2018 09:34

Bethia - I think it's biblical & found it in my family tree.

Tessa?
