Names that can be shortened to Beth or Tess

We are expecting DC3 (a girl) in the summer. We quite like the names Beth and Tess but our surname is short and one syllable so I feel like we need another syllable or two! Any suggestions? We can't use Elizabeth as we already have one in the wider family and not keen on Bethany. Bethan is a maybe. Don't like Theresa.

Tessa was my favourite girls name, also think Bethan is lovely. You have great taste Smile

TonicClonicAndTheWaves · 21/01/2018 13:14

I know a (Greek) Anastasia, known as Ted's.

Noopey08 · 22/01/2018 00:26

Tabetha, instead of Tabitha? Or just Abetha? Bethon? Bethonwy?

I am a Beth. These are some of the nicknames I have gained. Depends on how unique you’d like to go.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2018 01:47

I think both can be stand alone names, and Tilda can too.

You could balance the shorter names with a long middle one -
Beth Alexandra
Beth Rafaella
Tess Marguerite
Tess Leonora

Or two middle names -
Beth Opal Esme
Tess Anya Blythe

I had a friend at school called Tessa

MikeUniformMike · 22/01/2018 02:04

Noopey, you like yoonique names? I think your suggestions are terrible.

OkPedro · 22/01/2018 02:09

Beth is lovely without having a longer version. Don't like tess reminds me of the Loch Ness monster sorry 😂
Ruth is lovely too if you like Beth

CoffeeChocolateWine · 22/01/2018 21:15

Thanks so much all. Really helpful but I feel like I'm coming round to just using as standalone names. It seems a bit pointless to use a longer name that I like less just to get those nicknames. DH prefers Beth to Tess but we are considering other names too and still a little way to go!

Beth is awful- so boring, a 90s name. It's definitely not a standalone name.

Tess is lovely. Tessa is lovely too. These are both standalone names.

NapQueen · 22/01/2018 21:25

Tessa? Tbh I think Tess is perfectly nice on its own.

Bethan is lovely too.

GodIsDead · 22/01/2018 21:26

Contessa

Andthatsthat · 22/01/2018 21:28

I really like Bethan. Beth works equally as well.
Tess is cute, but Tessa sound a bit dated to me

Joinourclub · 22/01/2018 22:11

I know a Tessa and a Bethia. Both great names.

duckponds · 22/01/2018 22:15

Beth is such a lovely name and so much nicer than Tess. How about Elsbeth?

Andthatsthat · 22/01/2018 22:16

Ooh yes, Elspeth is gorgeous Smile

spugzbunny · 22/01/2018 22:28

Contessa makes me think of underwear!

Estellanpip · 22/01/2018 22:52

Tisiphone for Tess
But I prefer Beth(an)

OkPedro · 23/01/2018 01:21

Tisiphone Confused

Bubblesoup · 23/01/2018 09:15

I have two daughters - Beth (not short for anything), and Esther (nickname is Tess or Tessie) Grin

Our last name is 2 syllables but I wouldn't let a one syllable surname put you off! As others have pointed out, lots of people have short and simple names!

stellarfox · 23/01/2018 09:17

Betsy? I’d probably go with Elizabeth though as it has so many nickname potentials I’m not sure it matters too much if she is going to go by Beth and the other Elizabeth has a different nickname

stellarfox · 23/01/2018 09:18

Ooh love the suggestion of Elspeth/Elsbeth too!

WhyOhWine · 23/01/2018 09:24

DD knows a Tess which is apparently short for Tessera. No idea if that is a real name or one made up by her parents so that Tess could be short for something, but she always goes by Tess (or tessie) anyway.

Dolwar · 23/01/2018 10:34

If you're going to call her by the short version anyway why not call her Elizabeth? Plenty of people call their kids after a relative. People don't own or have the monopoly on a name

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/01/2018 12:27

Tess is lovely and fine on its own. Don't like Beth.
