Could Jemima be nicknamed Emmie? If not, what could I use. Not keen on 'Jem' . . . . . . .

OP, like many on here you are mixing up nicknames and diminutives.

A nickname is something a person earns or gets given in relation to something about them or what they have done. It is IMPOSSIBLE to assign a nickname to someone before they are born.

A diminutive is a shortened version of their own name.......like Charlie for Charles etc. It is not obligatory. There are several common diminutives of my own name and I have always gone by the full version. So if you can't find a diminutive you like, don't use one!!

"Hi we call jemima puddle."

How about Ducky?

SaltMarshPirate · 17/01/2018 22:40

The diminutive ‘Mima’ is adorable.

Yes, I agree it's a bit odd to think of nicknames/diminutives/whatever before you've named the child, unless you're thinking you might rule a name out if you don't like the associated nicknames/etc.

I know a Jemima who is named...jemima! Smile

Maybe you want your dd to be called emmie? In which case, maybe think of names that can be shortened to that? Emmeline, Emma, Emily....

I don't think it's weird to think of nicknames right away... In the past I've chosen a nickname that I like and then found a name so I could keep the nickname! Blush

I know an adult Jemima who is My-ma to the kids and a child who goes by Mim.

I do. Once the children go to school other kids give them their own nicknames. I think it is rather pointless to give a child a name so that you can invent another name to call them by.

An abbreviated name is different eg Elizabeth - Beth, Lizzie, Liz.

The Jemima we know is Jam.

CuppaTeaTime2 · 20/01/2018 16:47

No, I would say it's a nickname for Jemima.

Ones I know of are:
Mimi
Mima

CuppaTeaTime2 · 20/01/2018 16:48

I really dislike Emmie.

thamesk8 · 21/01/2018 22:23

People can do what they want! I love a name with options.

I personally cannot stand it when someone says “here’s my son Joshua” ...you get to know them, hang out at play groups etc refer to him as “Josh” and the mother loses her mind and says “oh, we detest Josh. He is Joshua.” Don’t go for Joshua if you hate josh! Go for another name where you bike all parts of it!! That Joshua will 100% be Josh as a teen!!!

Crazy not to go through potential nicknames or diminutives beforehand....

Ohmyfuck · 21/01/2018 22:26

Mimi. I love this name!
