Do you think Aoife blends in too much with all the Eva's and Ava's about? Obviously the spelling makes it stand out but is the pronunciation too similar? My daughter has a traditional irish name and looking for another.

I think Aoife is a beautiful name but I would expect some people will struggle with the spelling. That wouldn’t be enough to put me off though. If you love the name go for it!

pipilangstrumpf · 08/01/2018 12:18

How do you pronounce it Confused?

Helspopje · 08/01/2018 12:18

Eefer or eefa

oldbirdy · 08/01/2018 12:19

"eefa"

JollyGiraffe · 08/01/2018 12:19

No it's a different name

Rainatnight · 08/01/2018 12:20

It won't blend in but she'll spend the rest of her life spelling it for people all the time. I'm friends with an Aoife

oldbirdy · 08/01/2018 12:20

Op, my DD is 7. There are 2 Ava's, an Eva and an Aoife in her class, that's 4 of 12 girls with virtually the same name. It is a nice one though.

coragreta · 08/01/2018 12:20

I know one and she constantly gets called Eva. People unfamiliar tend to miss hear.

Wheelywheel · 08/01/2018 12:21

The pronounciation sounds fine but I have to physically stop myself from calling my friends DD ay-oh-eef.

That's probably just me but though!

ShotsFired · 08/01/2018 12:24

I knew one at a previous job. It's sort of "eee-fa" isn't it?

Certainly not like the Evas and Avas, but unless you are Irish I'd probably be a bit Hmm as to why you chose it. Mainly due to the lifetime of having to tell people how to say it.

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 08/01/2018 12:28

Gorgeous name. Go for it.

She won't spend her life explaining it. Trust me I know.

deptfordgirl · 08/01/2018 12:28

I know a few Aoifes, two adult and one newborn but all have Irish heritage. It is very similar to Eva in sound but probably wouldn't get the even more common Evie.

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 08/01/2018 12:34

EE -fah is how it is pronounced.

tabbywabby · 08/01/2018 12:46

I know an Aoife and it's a lovely name, but spelling it and explaining it her whole life is very irritating to her.

LaurieMarlow · 08/01/2018 12:56

Compared to lots of Irish names the spelling isn't too bad. It's only 5 letters. Go for it.

FinallyARainbow · 08/01/2018 13:00

Love it and don't think it blends in with Evas and Avas. A front runner for us if current bump is a girl.

1haudyerwheesht · 08/01/2018 13:08

The spelling doesn't bother me. I have a Saoirse. After you explain it once people generally get it. I'm more worried about it sounding too much like Eva and Ava. I'd pronounce it eefa.

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 08/01/2018 13:22

I'd love another girl just so I could call her Saoirse, beautiful name and meaning.

Eva and Aoife do have a similar sound. It depends where you live, if in Ireland it won't blend in but I can understand your concern if say living in England as on only hearing the name and not seeing the spelling people could pick it up as Eva, as the ear would probably default to Eva as that is what they are used to hearing. Sorry I don't know if I'm explaining myself properly.

1haudyerwheesht · 08/01/2018 13:36

No, that makes sense eight days. I'm just stumped. I love the name Saoirse so much and want a name I love just as much. It's proving to be very difficult. I love Imogen but I think it's quite popular. We are in Scotland so I'll need to look up our name statistics and see.

idontlikealdi · 08/01/2018 13:37

There's loads of Aoife's now, I doubt she'd need to explain it.

1haudyerwheesht · 08/01/2018 13:42

I don't want a popular name either!

neddle · 08/01/2018 14:04

How about Caoimhe? Was a favourite of mine but went with something more welsh and easier to spell. Plus I also had a Caelan and wanted different initials.

Enko · 08/01/2018 14:11

I have an Aoife she is 14 Yes people struggle with the name if they dont know how to say it. However once they have been told they usually are just fine with it.

She likes having a name not everyone can spell or say.

DullAndOld · 08/01/2018 14:13

lovely name and should be OK with the spelling

FloatyFlo · 08/01/2018 14:18

Saoirse - how do you pronounce this?
