Do you think Aoife blends in too much with all the Eva's and Ava's about? Obviously the spelling makes it stand out but is the pronunciation too similar? My daughter has a traditional irish name and looking for another.

Not sold by Emer. Not sure why, it's a perfectly lovely name

I love Maeve /Medbh/Maedbh/

MrsDustyBusty · 08/01/2018 19:38

Well it appears to depend on whether you could stand to have her called eefer.

snowplop · 08/01/2018 19:49

I love that name so much. No matter how many times I look up the correct pronunciation, to me it's pronounced 'Woofie' Blush

pipilangstrumpf · 08/01/2018 20:03

I think many people would have no idea how to spell or pronounce it, me included.

user1471134011 · 08/01/2018 20:06

Woofie????

LadyB49 · 08/01/2018 20:12

I love the Irish spellings of maeve.

tabbywabby · 08/01/2018 20:15

The spelling doesn't bother me.
LOL, OP. The point is whether it bothers your children; you remember, the ones who have to live with it their whole lives.

To answer your question, though. Yes, they will constantly get mixed up with Eva.

1haudyerwheesht · 08/01/2018 20:17

Tabby.. it doesn't bother me as it causes her no problems.

Nice name.

snowplop · 08/01/2018 20:55

Sorry user...I know!! Somehow Woofie has just stuck with me. I've never actually met an Aoife though...perhaps when/if I do the correct pronunciation will stick. It's such a pretty name but anyone with it will surely be asked to say/spell it all the time. I'm mum to an Isaac. I never dreamed it would be a problem but so many people mispronounce and misspell it.

Motherofbabydragons · 08/01/2018 21:12

Tabby your comment was incredibly rude actually.

Aofie may get confused with Eva but so does Amelie/Emily, Annabel/Amabel and lots of other names. Once corrected I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem. It’s a lovely name :)

ChevalierTialys · 08/01/2018 21:15

I love the name Aoife, reminds me of a wonderful Irish TA at my secondary school who was kind, clever and helped me massively with loads of stuff. ❤❤

Aoife is top of our shortlist, living in England and both Irish.
Also love Maeve but DH isn't as keen.

(now have you any nice boys names suggestions?)

buttercup54321 · 08/01/2018 22:53

Fiadh ❤️ means graceful becoming pretty popular in Ireland atm

HolyShmoly · 08/01/2018 23:17

Is Straun Scottish? I don't think I've heard of it before. Currently we like Senan and Declan, but DH is trying to push for Padraig which I'm not a fan of.

1haudyerwheesht · 08/01/2018 23:24

Yes, Struan is a Scottish name. I think it's getting quite popular now. I have never heard is Senan but it's really lovely as is Declan. I also quite like Cillian but it's already used in the family.
