Oh and it's not a chav name where I live it's McKenzie Logan and jayden that fit that description here

Sarahh2014 · 04/01/2018 19:48

Bit harsh GlitterBurps

I always find these name discussions fascinating. I’m Canadian-American (married to a Welshman) and what he finds normal/traditional I find horrifying and vice versa. For example, Mason is a normal name where I’m from, no social connotations whatsoever (I wouldn’t be surprised to see a member of State called Mason whatsoever) but he’d find it horrible. Likewise, nobody from where I’m from would ever consider any name like Harry/Arthur etc anything short of horrible but it’s insanely common and loved over here. Anyway, as long as you love the name I’d go for it, regardless of the social implications and class issues.

squoosh · 04/01/2018 19:49

It's a bit off to try and turn your sister off the name though. It's her son, you're just the aunt. The only time I'd tell someone in real life 'don't do that to your kid' is if they were going for something like Adolf or Randy. Or another name that would stop people in their tracks.

squoosh · 04/01/2018 19:51

That's true Rtmh, in North America names like Mason cross the class divide. It's a very British obsession, worrying what class people will think their child belongs to based on their name.

JulesJewels · 04/01/2018 19:53

Paisley is this for your baby or your sister’s?

mumgointhroughtorture · 04/01/2018 19:54

My 14 month old Nephew is called Mason and I love it .

Batteriesallgone · 04/01/2018 19:55

Makes me think of Mason jars...I find it wierd as a name tbh, because it makes me think of kitchens. Like an inanimate object.

Setting that aside I still don’t like it as a name because it’s so soft. M is a soft sound and so is S. I prefer soft and hard, like Max. IYSWIM. Double soft I only like in girl names.

Sorry OP.

Rumpledfaceskin · 04/01/2018 19:56

Literally hate that name. Sorry.

TabbyCat864 · 04/01/2018 19:58

I don't like it.

It's very popular at the minute. It's a surname IMO and is like Taylor- would be traditionally used as a surname to mark an occupation.

squoosh · 04/01/2018 20:00

I saw an American teen on TV called Thatcher. Now there's an occupation name that won't be coming into vogue in the UK any time in the near future.

crazycatgal · 04/01/2018 20:01

I hate it. I've known two boys with that name and they were both badly behaved - that kind of puts you off a name. It's my friend's surname too so seems silly as a first name to me.

Paisley8880 · 04/01/2018 20:04

My sister keeps mentioning it for MY baby. Every time I talk about boy name she just keeps saying Mason and I said I didn't like it and she said most people do so I did this hoping to get the reaction I have got to show her.

OP posts:
squoosh · 04/01/2018 20:08

Oh well then, I take back what I said! Grin

Tell her 'back off, auntie'.

loveka · 04/01/2018 20:11

Dreadful. Same boat as Jayden etc.

I have a friend who spent £30k on IVF only to name the poor sod Jayden.

Myzyllfta · 04/01/2018 20:12

I think it’s dreadful but having said that I know a Mason who is lovely child, kind, clever, sensitive and gorgeous looking so his parents are forgiven

Megabeth · 04/01/2018 20:18

I don't like it, my youngest was at primary school with a Mason and he wasn't nice. I'm not keen on Jackson or Kyran or Caden either.

GlitterBurps · 04/01/2018 21:24

Sarahh2014 OP asked for honest opinions of what was thought of the name and that’s my opinion based on my experience. I think people calling them chavs is more harsh than what I said and also there had been lots of posts saying about bad behaviour. I don’t dislike the name as such but that’s what I think when I hear it.

euanthesheepiloveyou · 04/01/2018 22:34

Awful name. I taught one - spelt Maison but pronounced the same - he put me off for life (hated the name before him though) & all I could think of, every time I called the register, was "Don't say 'house', don't say 'house'...)

I like it but I did think Kardashians straight away

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 05/01/2018 08:08

Erm Morgan - "a Celtic boy's name meaning fighter of the sea."

Morgan Freeman? My friend Morgan (who is a man)? NOT a girl's name imo.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 05/01/2018 08:09

But neither here nor there really since the OP doesn't like Mason. Just thought it was a nicer suggestion.

FizzyGreenWater · 05/01/2018 09:59

Hah! Show her this thread then.

No, most people do not like it. It's harsh, ugly, has a whole heap of negative connotations and to me doesn't even sound like a name - it's just a word for someone's profession. It has no character as a name - just a hard lump of a word. Truly yuk!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/01/2018 10:06

It's quite harsh sounding to me.
