DH likes Benedict, my response was ‘never’.

I do like the name but the ‘dic’ is rather unfortunate, isn’t it?

TIA

The Benedict I know is nick named Ned, BeNEDict.

Sugar that’s a really nice nn :) I love Ed (but unfortunately really dislike Edward...)

I wanted Benedict when naming our DC, but this was vetoed by DH on the same grounds. DD now goes to school with a couple of children called Benedict, and no, they have never had the nick taken. They are either called Benedict or Ben. I like to remind DH of this from time to time (he vetoed every name, for no good reason most of the time!)

are Dickie and other ‘dick-related’ nns pretty much inevitable?
I don't think so. I've taught a few Benedicts and they were all Ben, Bennie or Ned. I've never heard anyone try a 'dick' related nickname on them Grin.

I do also think of it as a Catholic name, but I am Catholic so I notice that more. I agree that Cumberwotsisface is probably responsible for making it more popular.

@alletik

Oh no... that sucks but is also a somewhat entertaining mental image, tbh...

DH doesn’t really veto names as long as he gets to give children both his surnames. which is what we agreed to. But also means that the responsibility of finding ‘good’ sensible names is primarily mine. (And no, it’s not like I’d disregard his opinion or choose a name he dislikes.)

SumAndSubstance

Good to know. I quite like Ben and Ned but I prefer Ed, tbh...

Thanks :)

Went to primary school with one who got called 'Bene-DICKHEAD'.

I know a boy called Benedict who is never called anything for short. As far as I know Dick has never been suggested, but he seems to have a strong enough personality to avoid shortenings he doesn't like as he's never been Ben, by his own choice. I definitely don't think of dicks when I hear Benedict. To be honest I don't even think of dicks when I hear Richard, although I had an older relative who was Dick short for Richard, because I think that's very dated now and anyone under about 40 would not even think of it - younger Richards are nearly always called Rich.

shsh3r · 03/01/2018 17:27

I really like Rupert which I think is same sort of name - what u think?? So different and original!

if you don't like a shortened version of the name you're thinking of don't go with it

FoggieFishieCarpeDiem · 04/01/2018 10:42

Goose... :( Poor child.

Username Thanks :)!!

shsh3r Rupert really is the same sort of name... I'll put it on the list. I personally currently like Edwin. Thanks :)!
