DH likes Benedict, my response was ‘never’.

I do like the name but the ‘dic’ is rather unfortunate, isn’t it?

TIA

It’s a great name. The ones I know are shortened to Ben (obvs).

Mrsknackered · 28/12/2017 19:00

The one I know is 'Ben'

The only Dick I know was a Richard, and he was a dick

FoggieFishieCarpeDiem · 28/12/2017 19:01

how
I went to school with a Benedict and his nn wasn’t Ben... :/

Which is probably my main issue with this name, tbh.

Ben
Benni /y
Benji
But ffs not Dick.

Oops, sorry. We wouldn’t call him Dick(ie). But I’d be worried about >Benedict’s< classmates and other children...

My question: are Dickie and other ‘dick-related’ nns pretty much inevitable (in your opinion)?

Sophronia · 28/12/2017 19:18

I went to school with a Dickon! I don’t remember him being teased for his name.

TheSameCoin · 28/12/2017 19:20

It wouldn’t occur to me to think that Dickie could be short for Benedict. I know 3. 2 are known as Ben and one is always Benedict.

NC4now · 28/12/2017 19:20

I went to school with a couple of Benedicts and DS chose it as his confirmation name.
I think it’s a lovely name and have only heard it shortened to Ben.

cathyclown · 28/12/2017 19:22

Why not call him Ben. That's a really lovely name and cannot be shortened.

Up to you of course, sorry!

Benedict was the name of the previous Pope who wore lovely red shoes.

Was called Pope Benny though.

FoggieFishieCarpeDiem · 28/12/2017 19:42

Benedict was the name of the previous Pope who wore lovely red shoes. true Wink

The name isn’t somewhat Catholic, isn’t it? (There’s obviously nothing wrong with that, btw.)

Sophronia

Good to know, thanks.

Antheanna · 28/12/2017 19:43

I like it. Benedict I mean. Also Richard.

Dickie not so much.

FoggieFishieCarpeDiem · 28/12/2017 19:46

Seems like most people named Benedict are called Ben or Benedict. That’s actually a relief... thanks :)!
(I personally prefer Bernard but you’ve convinced me. I’m willing to consider Benedict. Wink)

Foggie, it comes from the Benedictine Monks from centuries back.

But no matter what faith or none the name Ben is lovely to me anyway!

I meant to type: the name is somewhat Catholic.

I’m apparently rather useless this evening Blush Grin

I knew about St. Benedict and that Benedictus meant blessed. But I didn’t make the Benedictine monks connection... Thanks! :)

We considered Benedict for our boy but changed our mind, partly because of the Catholic connotations (we’re not religious). I never thought it’d be shortened to anything but Ben. In the end we chose Benjamin :)

NC4now · 28/12/2017 20:06

I do tend to think of it as a Catholic name, but I think it’ll be more popular in non Catholic circles soon thanks to Mr Cumberbach, or however it’s spelt.

The priests at our church are all Benedictine.

cathyclown · 28/12/2017 20:07

Foggie,

No need to explain at all. Benedict will be shortened to Benny or Ben anyway I think!

Lovely name either way. Despite the Catholic Monks connections!

But those kind of connections can apply to other numerous lovely names too.

Best wishes.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/12/2017 20:08

I used to teach. Taught a couple of Benedicts and they were all nicknamed Ben. Please no to Dickie. I taught one of them too and it was, unfortunately, nominative determinism with that one!

NC4now · 28/12/2017 20:09

By contrast, the name Dickie makes me think of The Talented Mr Ripley.

Swoon 😍

BitOutOfPractice · 28/12/2017 20:22

Nobody called Benedict gets called Dick or Dickie.

FoggieFishieCarpeDiem · 28/12/2017 20:52

NC4now ohh, Cumberbatch 😍

cathy thanks

Foggie, you are amazing with the way you are responding to everyone.

Hats off.

Happy New Year. And Happy baby naming!

FoggieFishieCarpeDiem · 28/12/2017 21:08

cathy

Thanks, I do try. But I didn’t actually answer everyone (especially if they said the same as someone else). I hope that it doesn’t seem like I didn’t appreciate their answers 🙈 Blush

DH is very happy that you mumsnetters convinced me to consider Benedict (for a boy).

Happy New Year to you as well :)!
