I know it's really popular but I love it. Don't like Tilly though, could Millie be used as a nn? What are your thoughts? Is it too popular? The other one we like is Tabitha.

Love it

thethoughtfox · 23/12/2017 13:34

Love it. Millie doesn't work as a nn and is very popular, much more so than Matilda. Tabitha is also sweet with Tabby as a nn. Excellent taste, op.

CurryWorst · 23/12/2017 13:34

Love it. My niece is Tilda.

Paperchains1986 · 23/12/2017 13:35

I love it, my husband doesn't Sad

SumAndSubstance · 23/12/2017 13:36

The Matildas I have known have been Tillie or Mattie if that’s an alternative? I think Millie works okay though if you prefer that. Nice name.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/12/2017 13:50

It's a very pretty name. However If you don't like Tilly avoid it as your dd might want to use Tilly

CryptoFascist · 23/12/2017 13:53

Both Matilda and Tabitha are lovely names, nice choices op.

deptfordgirl · 23/12/2017 13:57

Thank you. I prefer Mattie and Tilda to Tilly as well.

I know a Matilda, aged 5, whose name is never shortened, so you don't have to have a nn. But if you don't like Tilly, there's Mattie or Tilda.

Love Tabitha btw!

jmscp2015 · 23/12/2017 13:59

Use Tabitha for me, I had it vetoed Grin love it!

countycouncil · 23/12/2017 14:08

Love Matilda and agree with pp who said just don't shorten it. I know a 16 year old Christopher who has always been Christopher, his mum had to enforce it in the early days though

CaptainChristmas · 23/12/2017 14:09

Tilda is my favourite shortening by far. Millie is really popular, or was a few years ago, so it sounds a bit ‘done’ to me. It also is a pejorative slang term in NI, but that may not be an issue for you.

I prefer Tabitha to Matilda, though I do like both.

PinkAvocado · 23/12/2017 14:11

I don’t think it is really popular (both anecdotally and according to the ONS). I love it! The only one I know goes by Tilda. Great name. I also like Tabitha but DH said it’s a cat’s name Hmm

Tisfortired · 23/12/2017 14:21

My niece is called Matilda, she's a Tilda.

Wireagogo · 23/12/2017 14:22

We have a 10yr old Tabatha and I still love the name. Different spellings so be aware that you will get lots of things addressed wrong. :) you'll also get lots of references to Bewitched (although you may be too young for that). She gets shortented to Tabs and Tabby. I do agree it makes an excellent cat name too! 😂

Matilda was on our shortlist (along with Jemima) and I also love that. I know two Matildas. One has always been Matilda. The other is Matty which I think it quite cute but I imagine many Mns would hate.

XmasTreeOhXmasTree · 23/12/2017 17:58

Contrary to other posters, I think Matilda is awful. It's overly popular and is a precocious name. Mattie isn't nice.

SmileChuck · 23/12/2017 18:03

I love Tildie as a short version. Don't like Tilly.

AlmostChristmas · 23/12/2017 18:13

I like Mattie, Millie is diminutive of Millicent or Mildred.

BrieAndChilli · 23/12/2017 18:17

I have a Matilda and when in preschool her friends naturally shortened it to Tilda as it was easier to say, a couple of her friends call her Tilly but it’s mainly Tilda.

BrieAndChilli · 23/12/2017 18:17

She’s 9 and it’s only the last couple of years it’s really gained popularity, we never used to be able to find anything with her name on until the last year or so

PinkAvocado · 23/12/2017 18:54

It’s gained popularity but I’m not sure how it can be described as ‘overly popular’ given where it is in the table!

XmasTreeOhXmasTree · 23/12/2017 21:30

PinkAvocado It definitely is overly popular regionally.

WyfOfBathe · 23/12/2017 21:38

I love the name Matilda. DH vetoed it for DD, but it probably would have been my first choice.

I know two, one is a teenager and one's an adult. One is known as Tilly, but the other is always Matilda with no shortening. I don't know any baby/toddler Matildas, and I have a 1 year old so I know quite a few babies. It might be more popular in some ares.

I'm not too keen on Tabitha - it was the name of my friend's tabby so I think of it as more of a cat name.

WildCherryBlossom · 23/12/2017 21:42

I've always loved Mathilda (had a teddy bear with the name when I was little - I chose it because I thought it was so beautiful) I know sisters called Tabitha & Mathilda and I think the names work perfectly together.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/12/2017 21:47

I know more Matilda's than any other name. It is ridiculously popular here (east mids). I'm not sure Millie really works, not a fan of Tilly either but i like Tilda and Mattie
