Do you like it? I heard it in my sons playground today and thought it was different! Or maybe I'm losing my mind..

Makes me think of the receptionist girl in Tattoo Fixers.

Two largely sympathetic articles about Paisley:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/feb/25/uk-city-of-culture-2021-paisley-scotland

www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35640304

It's a very interesting place, though it also has lots of problems. Its name (=Scottish version of an ancient Greek word) means 'church'.

I know it's becoming popular as a personal name, but I really don't see why.

earlofhell · 23/12/2017 16:34

i live in paisley, its town centre has went the way of most town centres but it is a great place to live, lots of lovely people, i love it. wouldnt call my child it though Smile

starzig · 23/12/2017 16:44

If you have ever been to Paisley you just wouldn't.

k2p2k2tog · 23/12/2017 17:41

I live near Paisley. No offence to anyone who lives there, but if you'd ever been you'd laugh your head off at anyone calling their child after it.

Although I suppose it does set up Ferguzleigh-Parque as a sibling name.

Notreallyarsed · 23/12/2017 17:44

@k2p2k2tog or worse, “Feegie Park” for short Grin

Fekko · 23/12/2017 17:46

Fay Paisley?

Notreallyarsed · 23/12/2017 17:48

Oh I needed this thread today Grin I’m off to search Facebook for baby Fergusleigh-Parque and her brother Possil Grin

Fekko · 23/12/2017 17:50

Bahr-Heidi?

k2p2k2tog · 23/12/2017 17:53

Glasgow areas are ripe for changing into yoo-neek baby names. Why have a Hackney or a Camden when you could have a Pollock-Shawz, an I'broquez, Bearz-deyne, Newtonne-Mearnzzzz or Eeastyrreh-Hooze?

Notreallyarsed · 23/12/2017 17:53

Goooricky? Or for the more discerning Bernasden?

Elllicam · 23/12/2017 17:53

Paisley isn’t that bad! I used to live there and it’s got some lovely bits. Not sure about it as a name though.

Lidlfix · 23/12/2017 18:04

The withdrawal method is also referred to as "getting off at Paisley" as it's a stop before Glasgow. Just so many negative associations (I have nothing against the town) and I adore paisley pattern. Please (and I have 4 DDs with names that are considered unusual) don't.

Cannotwillnot · 23/12/2017 18:10

Please go to Paisley first and also do some research on Ian Paisley.

For a child named Paisley, these will be associations growing up and they might change your mind!

ColdTeddy · 23/12/2017 18:16

I know a grown up Paisley. Not American (or Scottish!). At first I thought it sounded ridiculous but it's sort of grown on me now. It's not that bad.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 23/12/2017 18:29

I never heard that expression before lidlfix it's brilliant.
Buddy is probably a much better choice of name, although arkleston does have a certain ring to it.

daisypond · 23/12/2017 18:42

Impressions that came to mind - Scottish town. Pattern. Northern Irish politician. Tattoo Fixers. If only I could disassociate some of those impressions and isolate it just to the pattern, it could be OK, but they all come together in big mass.

CaptainChristmas · 23/12/2017 19:11

May have been suggested already, but going with the print theme; how about Liberty? I bloody love it! Such a great name for a girl. Would use if we were expecting a girl (if pesky dh didn’t veto).

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 23/12/2017 22:09

Great idea CaptainChristmas

I love a good Liberty tana lawn

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/12/2017 22:55

I like Paisley for a girl, and know a very lovely one.

midsomermurderess · 24/12/2017 11:02

You might have second thoughts if you’d ever visited the place.

Fekko · 24/12/2017 11:03

Or met my ex sil...

It’s very American.

If you’re a Londoner it will be pronounced Piseley by lot of people.

Puremince · 25/12/2017 21:11

Another Scot here to say that it doesn't work as a name in Scotland.
