Middle name for Thomas?

DS is being called Thomas after DH's dad who passed away. I'd have chosen something more exciting but understand that DH wants to honour his dad. So I'm looking for a more exciting middle name! Our surname starts with S and Thomas S---- doesn't flow well, so I'm expecting him to use his middle name all the time.

I'm looking for something cool and modern with some sort of meaning, maybe a surname sort of name. Ideas so far have included:

Thomas Winter or Thomas Frost (because of the weather)
Thomas Gray (a family name)
Thomas Wolf (related to where we live)

Are any of these silly? Any more ideas?

Please don't use frost as a middle name.

Hundredacrewoods · 14/12/2017 09:10

I don't know anyone who uses their middle name all the time. If your preferred first name doesn't go with your last name I think you need to reconsider, despite wanting to honour FIL.

Sophronia · 14/12/2017 09:51

Would you shorten it to Tom? Tom S— might sound better.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/12/2017 10:52

Personally, I like Thomas James, however, how about ;
Thomas Oakley
Thomas Hunter
Thomas Gray S.... Is nice too.

CatInTheChristmasTree · 14/12/2017 16:48

I wouldn't personally use Thomas if it doesn't flow with your second name. You can't expect your DS to want to use his middle name for his whole life and he may not want to shorten it to Tom.

Equally, if you want a more exciting name and you're not happy with Thomas, don't use it. Thomas could be his middle name. You may want to honour your FiL, but this is the name you'll be calling your own son forever.

Love Thomas gray! That sounds great! Funnily enough I know someone with that full name. He is very talented handsome and nice BTW! X

PinkAvocado · 14/12/2017 17:18

Gray is the best but I’m not sure how easy it is to get a middle name used all the time. The names you’ve suggested all make it sound more like a double barrelled surname - is that what you’re going for?

TatianaLarina · 14/12/2017 17:18

He won’t ever use his middle name. And he be called Tom anyway.

LovelyBranches · 14/12/2017 18:30

Grayson Thomas is lovely. My Df passed away and my son has his own first name, my fathers name, my maiden surname and our shared last name. It sounds like a mouthful but it actually flows really nice.

ChequeredPasta · 14/12/2017 18:37

Thomas River?

user1459464195 · 14/12/2017 18:46

Thomas Rex! T Rex is just too lovely

Otherwise
Thomas Caspian (link to Christmas)
Thomas Everett
Thomas Balthazar (another Christmas name)
Thomas Dashiell
Thomas Otis
Thomas Jasper
Thomas Orlando
Thomas Magnus
Thomas Flynn

Do any of these appeal?

Bellamuerte · 14/12/2017 19:11

Giving FIL's first name to DS is non-negotiable. It would break DH's heart if I said no. But it doesn't flow with our surname at all (first name ends in S and surname begins with S). DH says his dad had the same first name and surname, and he was never troubled by it not flowing. I've met kids with names like Lily-Rose or John-Paul, so thought it would be a way to get around the lack of flow. I don't think it would be an issue for him to use it all the time.

The thing is, Thomas isn’t often used with a hyphenated name like the ones you gave as an example so won’t flow as well and more likely not to be used. It sounds clumsy.

I don’t think it sounds much of a problem with the double s though - Thomas Smith, Thomas Simmonds ... They sound fine and it isn’t often you need to use both even if you think they sound clumsy together. If he naturally becomes ‘Tom’ even less of an issue.

midsomermurderess · 14/12/2017 19:48

Andrew.

Patal · 14/12/2017 20:52

I think Wolf if a lovely name especially when it has a meaning to you both and is cool and trendy like you want.

Bryson means grandson of a noble man which is nice as another way to honour FIL.

Connell means strong willed
Fergus means first, important

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/12/2017 20:58

Bryson Thomas is really cool.

Saffronwblue · 14/12/2017 21:02

Could he be Tommy mn?
tommy Jack
Tommy Wolf
tommy Grey
Tommy Finn?

DiegoMadonna · 14/12/2017 21:27

In all likelihood he'll end up being known as Tom, so the surname beginning with S won't be much of an issue.

TatianaLarina · 15/12/2017 00:07

First of all hyphenated names are pants. Secondly Thomas is going to sound very odd hypened to something else.

Jean-Paul is a very old name.

I don’t see there’s a major issue just because your surname starts with an S, I think your DH is right.

I knew someone called Thomas Sutcliffe - it was fine. (Everyone called him Tom anyway)

EveMoneypenny · 15/12/2017 10:03

My 8 week old DS is Thomas S-! Doesn't bother us, although he's too young to give an opinion on it right now. He probably will be Tom before too long anyway.

EveMoneypenny · 15/12/2017 10:07

It's even used in a brand name - Thomas Sabo (jewellery).

TheTroutofNoCraic · 15/12/2017 13:44

I have a Thomas, not an S surname though. However I think that the flow from Thomas into and an S surname is lovely and contiguous.

Things that are much more jarring, in my opinion are having a 2 hard consonant first and surname. I have a first name and maiden name which both start with a hard C and I always hated it.

PinkCrystal · 17/12/2017 01:38

I think Thomas sounds fine with an S surname.
I wouldn't go with any of the names suggested except Gray in the middle. Kids can tease if it's something too out of the ordinary. I hated my unusual middle name.
I disagree that middle names are never used. My kids have had to write them on almost every form and they are often addressed as such officially.
How about
Thomas......
Ethan
William
Isaac
Aidan
Dylan
Freddie
Hugo
Joel
Zach
Jacob
Kai
Micah

My husband is a Thomas s! Never occurred to me that it doesn’t flow. He’s mainly known as Tom or Tommy. Middle name Harry

horatioisabrick · 18/12/2017 22:58

Thomas is lovely! Thomas S isn’t too bad.

And he might just end up being called Tom S...

But if you do expect him to regularly use his middle name I’d recommend a very short or very ‘wearable’ middle name.
Wolf or maybe David, Eli, Samuel, James, Lee, Sebastian, Philip, Cole, Hale, Ian, Paul, Luke etc...

Leo, Rollo, Adler or Bear could work as well(imo).
