Zayda

After scouring list after list of names and OH and I thrashing out likes and dislikes we came across the name Zayda. Not sure we can use Angelica with it but we think it sounds lovely has a nice meaning and doesn't sound too sing-songy with our DD Nancy. Too far out for a typically British surname? I tentatively really really like it.

My mind also went straight to the Yiddish also. (My DDad is Jewish).

MikeUniformMike · 13/12/2017 17:57

-er.
Names ending in a usually get pronounced as if the a is an uh.
If the surname or following name starts with a vowel and invisible r creeps in.
Sarah Atkins would be pronounced Sarah Ratkins, Anna Edwards would become Annuh Redwards. It just would.

Just because I say Law and Order doesn't mean that other people don't say Laura Norder.

MikeUniformMike · 13/12/2017 17:58

an invisible not and invisible

Battleax · 13/12/2017 17:59

Yes, 'uh' is probably a better rendering, actually. I'd never make a linguistics bod Smile

MyBeloved · 13/12/2017 17:59

I concur with pp, it is indeed Yiddish for grandfather 😊

BhajiAllTheWay · 13/12/2017 21:26

grandpa! Definitely the first thing I thought of.

buttercup54321 · 13/12/2017 23:42

Really don't like it. Looks like it comes from a game.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 13/12/2017 23:44

Sounds too much like Jayda which is just not an association you want right now? Grin

Buntysoven · 14/12/2017 00:39

OH can't deal with the grandad association ConfusedGrinBack to the drawing board! He's suggested Judith. Too frumpy?

OP posts:
Dolwar · 14/12/2017 09:45

It means grandad.....enough said tbh.

MyBeloved · 14/12/2017 09:55

I like Judith. Can be shortened to Jude or Judy. I also like Miriam/Maryam.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/12/2017 10:30

Yes, I like Judith, it's rather unusual these days !
Nancy and Grandad 😂
Never mind, we live and learn.

Hotpinkangel19 · 14/12/2017 10:42

Sorry 😂😂 grandad made me laugh!!!!

Buntysoven · 14/12/2017 17:44

Yeah Nancy and grandad not great! Poor kid. Ready made nickname 😂😂😂Trying to love Judith but don't really. Sorry to be such a pain.

Hmm, not feeling Zayda or Judith to be honest. Nancy is lovely, it was on our list but we had a boy! But Judith to with it? No. Jude on its own is cool though

IVflytrap · 14/12/2017 18:22

I quite like Judith, possibly because I know a rather cool one. She went by Judith or sometimes Judy or as a child (which is a cute nickname in my opinion) and now as an adult goes by Jude.

Also the Judith of legend is a nice strong female figure - a kind of biblical-era assassin. Grin

Zaide (Zai-ee-duh) is the name of an early unfinished 'Turkish' opera by Mozart. [http://www.mozart.com/en/timeline/work/zaide/]]

BluePlasticBuddha · 14/12/2017 19:33

Lilith?

Also a kick-arse woman in the bible.

although it's quite a legend to saddle a baby with!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/12/2017 21:17

How about ;
Nancy and Zadie
Nancy and Cherith
Nancy and Edith
Nancy and Meredith
Nancy and Ruby
Nancy and Zoe

Buntysoven · 14/12/2017 23:46

Thanks Sugarpie. We've vetoed another ee ending so Zadie and Ruby are out. Edith and Meredith too old lady with Nancy for me, not keen on Cherith, Zoe is OH's boss which would be weird. Hoping something will just pop out!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/12/2017 12:37

Naming baby after DHs boss, almost as bad as Grandad 😂

Footle · 15/12/2017 14:41

Another one confirming it means Grandpa

RavenWings · 15/12/2017 16:13

Is this an accent thing? Samantha, Mathilda, Sara, Natalia, Alexandra, Xenia, Isabella etc all end an "er" sound.

This is a rhotic vs non rhotic accent issue - for me, Samantha etc end in an ah (or uh) sound, not er. I try to avoid -a ending names as I'm not a fan of how the er pronunciation sounds myself.

RavenWings · 15/12/2017 16:15

Also I think Judith is godawful, but I like Zayda (although I prefer Zaida).

It did remind me of Zainab, although I think that might be a difficult name to pull off if you aren't Muslim.
