Teddy

I absolutely love the name Teddy and it's a strong contender for our baby boy due in May but I really don't like Theodore and I can't have Edward as it's my brother in laws name. Is Teddy a name that can be used just by itself? Others opinions would be great!

Congrats OP, I have to say I agree with some previous posters, Teddy is very sweet for a baby and toddler, but not so much for a man.

It is also becoming quite popular, I know a few Teddy’s.

To be completely honest, you are never going to have everyone like the name you chose, and definitely not on mumsnet! Go with what you like. Good luck for May Flowers

Overused and not appropriate for a professional adult.

teaortequila23 · 12/12/2017 11:45

I really don’t class teddy as a name but more of a nickname if you don’t like Theodore or Edward name him ted.
Also I try to name my kids strong names and tbh teddy for an adult is just Confused

CrossFreelancer · 12/12/2017 11:50

Can you give him the name Ted?
Use Teddy as a nick name while he is going

CrossFreelancer · 12/12/2017 11:51

Young*

Shen0102 · 12/12/2017 11:52

I agree with others Ted/Tedd sounds more formal then you can use teddy as nickname..

PinkAvocado · 12/12/2017 11:54

I think applying the ‘would I like it?’ measure is always best. I wouldn’t like to be called Teddy in my 30s-I would rather have the option of Edward. If he will be Teddy day to day I would give him the option for Edward later. We considered our BiL’s name for DS2-as Teddy is so different to Ed or Edward I don’t think it would seem odd.

Fellia · 12/12/2017 11:58

I adore this name! Go for it OP, he can always go by Ted if he wants when he’s older.

mum2bemay22 · 12/12/2017 12:02

Yes we spoke about what he would like come his 30's and we agreed that Ted would probably be better but he can definitely get away with Teddy up to his 30's, I suppose it's how comfortable he felt. I perhaps might just go with Tedd as his actual name and then Teddy at home ☺️

I know a small Teddy and a small Ted who are both just that - and another little Ted who's actually Edward. I do see it as a diminutive rather than a name in its own right, but understand why it might feel a bit odd to name him after your BiL! Is Frederick too tenuous?

Frustratedboarder · 12/12/2017 12:21

Do it mum2! Tedd is amazing miss you, Gramps and as others have said you could all what people thing of the names Sarah and Margaret (ie incredibly normal and conventional names) and you'll still get people whinging and sneering!

DD has a massively unusual name that I often thank God I didn't ask mumsnet about back in the day - also very 'cutsie' which often gets sniffed at my MN as rendering them virtually unemployable as an adult - but I did soften it by giving her a more 'serious' middle name age can use if she wishes further down the line....

SPOILER ALERT FOR FIFTY SHADES!!

There are a few Teddys around now, possibly because the characters call their son that at the end of the third Fifty Shades book, if I recall correctly. Just thought I'd mention it as the film is coming out soon!

mum2bemay22 · 12/12/2017 12:27

Oh no thank you for the fifty shades heads up!! I've never read the book so I genuinely had no clue, let's hope that comes out after he comes out haha!!

there are Ted's and Teddy's out there who have always been known as that e.g Teddy Sheringham

Except his name is not Teddy, it's a nickname.

I've just released that I also knew a Ted whose name wasn't that at all he was T.E.D. I had no idea it wasn't his name.

wineusuallyhelps · 12/12/2017 12:31

I imagine it's coming out around Valentine's Day as usual. I know this because I always go and watch them to admire Jamie Dornan in the buff.

mum2bemay22 · 12/12/2017 12:35

Oh no lol, even that won't stop me however! Husband & I have gone over and over this name now and considered all aspects and we are agreeing on Tedd George W.. and Teddy at home!! You can't please everyone hey!

Edmund comes to mind.

wineusuallyhelps · 12/12/2017 12:36

Personally I really like it! Hope all goes well.

mum2bemay22 · 12/12/2017 12:38

Thanks, wineusuallyhelps

Don't kids call their teddy bear teddy? It's cute for a stuffed bear and maybe for a toddler.

But I wonder how many 13 year old teenage boys would want to be called Teddy?

So personally I would give your son a proper name so he has options. I like Thaddeus a lot!

pipilangstrumpf · 12/12/2017 14:14

Wouldn't Edmund or Edward naturally shorten to Ed or Eddie?

mum2bemay22 · 12/12/2017 14:55

How is Teddy not a proper name? It's in fact number 27 out of the top 100 boys names for this year so far so quite clearly others find Teddy a proper name. I'm sure there are worse names in the classroom in our day and age than Teddy for a 13 year old, thank you!

userabcname · 12/12/2017 15:12

I like Teddy! And George as a middle name is lovely. Great choice OP!

SoupDragon · 12/12/2017 15:23

Why have you decided on using two Ds at the end? I think he's going to spend his entire life correcting people's spelling.

Unless it's a foreign spelling/name, in which case ignore me!

SoupDragon · 12/12/2017 15:27

I should add that was a genuine question and not an arsey one!
