Tadhg, Joshua or Shay?

Obviously a fan of Irish names but I don't have much of an Irish heritage so does it seem a bit daft? I like biblical names too but know so many Noah's etc so maybe Joshua?

Opinions please?!

The only Tadhg I knew pronounced his name ‘Teeg’, such a lovely name.

RavenWings · 10/12/2017 16:35

Shay wouldn't immediately scream Irish to me, in the way that Fiachra, Donnchadh, Niall etc would. I think it's a nice name, fairly straightforward for non-Irish to pronounce too I'd have thought (and if not, they can learn - just look at the popularity of Phoebe etc)

OhChill · 10/12/2017 21:59

I love Tadgh, but not pronounced Tag Confused.

I’d go with Joshua.

Joinourclub · 10/12/2017 22:03

I think Shay sounds nice, but I have known as many female Shays/Shaes as I have male.

RedBlackberries · 10/12/2017 22:15

Still embarrassed I got the pronunciation wrong Blush. It's 50/50 between Joshua and Shay now.

I like Shay but could I also throw Fintan into the mix. Pronounced as it is written Smile

helpmum2003 · 11/12/2017 13:51

Joshua.

Personally I think Shay sounds chavvy not Irish. Sorry!!

astoundedgoat · 11/12/2017 14:09

I'd go with Joshua. It's a great name.

ItsTuesday · 11/12/2017 16:33

Joshua. Shay these days reminds me of the lass from Pretty Little Liars.

Wait4nothing · 11/12/2017 16:36

I’ve Joshua (and josh as a nn)
Would be on my list if we weren’t planning a Welsh first name (dd has one and it seems daft not to)

junebirthdaygirl · 11/12/2017 16:58

Tadhg is lrish for Timothy..lovely name. My favourite there.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 11/12/2017 17:06

Shay is going to be the next Jordan/Connor/Jayden type name imo.

I like the other two, especially Tadgh which I’d never beard before but love!

Annabelle4 · 11/12/2017 17:16

I love Joshua.

I can't stand the name Conor with two n's. It's a surname and just looks wrong imo. Conor is a great name though.

I don't particularly like Shay, but I don't think it's 'chavvy'

SantaStuckInTheChimney · 11/12/2017 17:22

Hate Joshua. Hate the sound of the name and it is so popular. He will be one of many at school.

Love Shay. Really cool.

yellowplumpreserves · 11/12/2017 19:57

Joshua

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 11/12/2017 20:08

I love the name Tadgh but I’d steer clear as it has connotations you might not be aware of if you’re not Irish. Don’t like Shay at all, used to go out with a very nice Josh so Joshua wins Wink

CharisMama · 11/12/2017 20:11

What connotations does it have? I'm Irish and I'm not aware of any.

I know it is similar to Taig in sound but Harry and Gary are close in sound but have a totally different feel.

SoupyNorman · 11/12/2017 20:15

Taig is a derivative of Tadhg.

SoupyNorman · 11/12/2017 20:15

As in, the derogatory term for a Catholic

buzzbeebee · 11/12/2017 20:31

In NI most people I know called Tadhg is pronounced 'Tag' - is it one of those names that is pronounced differently depending on where you are such as Caoimhe 'keeva vs Qweva'. In Ulster Irish it's 'Keeva'

I know a few Baby Shays but spelt Sé. I do like this name a lot. Simple, can't be shortened.

I'm not a fan of Joshua.

I would probably go with Shay if I was you. Tadhg is just very complicated outside of Ireland.

Alternatively Oisin is my fav name, others to consider Caolán, Cathaoir, Pádraig,

CharisMama · 11/12/2017 20:36

Yes I apologise for not knowing that Tadhg and Taig have the same root. I think of Tadhg as being Irish for Poet. I didn't know it was part of the base for a sectarian insult. Janey mackers. It's a not rare, not popular either name in Ireland though.

usernamewhatever101 · 11/12/2017 21:29

I like Shay, there's a few at dds RC primary. My girls have Irish names, they would have been Paddy's if they'd been boys.

Patal · 12/12/2017 06:56

Shay is the perfect blend if wanting an Irish name without choosing one with the typical Irish spelling. Easy to spell, read and pronounce which will suit all of your family and friends.

I love Shay but already have a cousin called Shae so off the list for me
