Tadhg, Joshua or Shay?

Obviously a fan of Irish names but I don't have much of an Irish heritage so does it seem a bit daft? I like biblical names too but know so many Noah's etc so maybe Joshua?

Opinions please?!

Sorry but if you thought Tadgh was pronounced Tag I would say don't use it, You will spend your life telling people how to pronounce the name and will always be asked why you chose an Irish name if it's not your background. I once met a girl who told me with a straight face that her name Siobhan was actually pronounced Sigh - oh - bawn. Poor kid.

RedBlackberries · 09/12/2017 11:33

You're right toes Blush
I think that Ines off the table!!

Is Tadgh always tie-g?

For some reason I thought it was tee-g. Have I been spelling the poor chap's name wrong all along Blush

Mrsknackered · 09/12/2017 11:42

I love Shea and Tadgh.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/12/2017 11:47

Diarmad or Dermot. Ciaran, Cian or Cillian. Just a few more Irish ones that are pretty well known and easy to pronounce in English.

BuzzKillington · 09/12/2017 14:01

Tadhg is pronounced tige, NOT tag!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 09/12/2017 15:13

Connor is good.
Joseph
Daniel
Liam

SingingSeuss · 09/12/2017 15:28

Joshua, it's timeless.

astoundedgoat · 09/12/2017 15:29

Other good pronounceable Irish boy names are Ferdia and Fiachra.

EssentialHummus · 09/12/2017 15:31

Joshua gets my vote.

Mashoclock · 09/12/2017 16:09

Joshua :)

Rainbowandraindrops67 · 09/12/2017 17:12

Def Joshua
How about Fergus?

RedBlackberries · 09/12/2017 17:38

Lots of Joshua fans. Is Shay too unusual for a non Irish baby?

If I’m honest it just sounds a bit chavvy sorry

BuzzKillington · 09/12/2017 19:00

Shay is just awful - Irish or not. I know 'chavvy' is frowned upon on here, but it is chavvy.

Tinselistacky · 09/12/2017 19:06

I have a Shay - a non chavvy one - he wishes I had called him Seamus.

Rainbowandraindrops67 · 09/12/2017 19:25

Seamus is good!

JacintaJones · 09/12/2017 21:26

Finnan? Finbar?

DavetheCat2001 · 09/12/2017 22:35

Joshua

Kellyturnbull · 09/12/2017 22:36

My boys called Shay and we are Scottish. I wanted an Irish name too and just loved this name when I heard it. He loves his name and we always get compliments, it’s not very common where we are though so most people think it’s nice and not too common :).
I know loads of Joshua’s so that puts me off the name personally
Hope you find the name x

buttercup54321 · 10/12/2017 00:52

Joshua.
The others are terrible

CharisMama · 10/12/2017 00:57

I like Tadhg the best but it's hg not gh at the end!

Shay is ok, tiny bit dated but nothing wrong with that. Joshua is ok. I'm Irish and my dc don't have Irish names but I prefer the sound of Shay but the vibe of Tadhg.

CharisMama · 10/12/2017 01:01

Ferdia and Fiachra are lovely. Names that would be chosen by very non-chav parents here in Ireland but they would sound ''weird'' in the UK.

I love Diarmuid. Or Fionn. Oisin. The legend names.

BackforGood · 10/12/2017 01:06

Really don't like the name Shay.
Never a good idea to give a child a name you don't know how to pronounce yourself, and seems odd to go with an Irish name if you don't live there and don't have Irish heritage. They tend to be very difficult to both pronounce (as you've shown) and spell for folk who aren't Irish.

Leaves Joshua, which is a lovely name Smile

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 10/12/2017 16:23

Can't believe so many people hate Shay, I love it. But I've always known it as a shortening of Seamus for my many uncles with the same name. Can't understand what's considered 'chavvy' out it though!
