Philomena?

I'd love any opinions, thoughts or alternative suggestions. Surname is Gator and other possible names include Genevieve, Margot and Allegra (though most likely not Allegra due to the Ally-Gator issue).
I also like (but husband dislikes) Araminta. Big sister is Ottilie.

Help!

Margot is lovely. Philomena screams middle aged Irish mammy.

Greenteandchives · 08/12/2017 08:50

Margot Gator is very clunky. Genevieve is better.
Not keen on Philomena, OP.

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/12/2017 08:51

Not a fan of Philomena sorry it just sounds frumpy and serious but not in a good way. What about Philippa? Similar name.

I would say Allegra is a no go. Not a fan of Genevieve (Jocelyn has a similar feel) but i like Margot

Plus Ottilie and Margot sound lovely together

I'm with your DH on Araminta

ruralmother · 08/12/2017 08:54

DH likes Arabella but I think Bella names are everywhere at the moment so find it a bit blah.

Genevieve Gator is lovely.

Not a fan of Philomena Gator. I'm don't like how it all sort of flows into one word. Sounds like some sort of prehistoric reptile to me Grin sorry!

Same sort of issue with Allegra- Allegragator.

Margot is a nice name but also not sure it works with surname.

Soy vote is Genevieve!

JollyGiraffe · 08/12/2017 08:59

*So my.

Autocorrect trying to make me sound Spanish.

Bluntness100 · 08/12/2017 09:34

Can you spell it Filomena? Like in Dracula? My Italian grandmother has this name. I think spelling it with an f and not a ph makes it more feminine.

OpalTree · 08/12/2017 09:38

I came across a Philomena in SE England who would be about 11 now. I quite like Mena, but i don't have the elderly associations with it others would have as I've never known anyone with the name, only a school named St Philomena's

MammieBear · 08/12/2017 09:42

Philomena is lovely, you could have pippin or Polly as nns.

MammieBear · 08/12/2017 09:43

Pippy silly phone.

ElenaBothari · 08/12/2017 09:46

I can't hear philomena without singing the song, and I don't like it with gator sorry.

MikeUniformMike · 08/12/2017 10:20

I'm not sure how you could derive Pippy or Polly from Philomena.

earlgreyandgherkins · 08/12/2017 12:02

Ottilie is such a nice name, it's hard to find one tht is as nice ! I don't think philomena is in the same league

Debby08 · 08/12/2017 12:06

Why not Madison? :) though Araminta is also beautiful.

SoftBlocks · 08/12/2017 12:09

Genevieve.

mammmamia · 08/12/2017 12:10

Don't like it but I love Genevieve, I think it is fine with your surname. I know one who is nicknamed Evie which is cute.

ScarlettOH · 08/12/2017 12:11

Delilah?

Mrsknackered · 08/12/2017 12:37

Would Finella or Fionnaula be any good?

Not a fan of Philomena. I agree with you on Arabella, I know an awful up her own arse Arabella, so that puts me off too.

What about?
Heloise
Hebe
Beatrix
Maeve

PoncyCanapes · 08/12/2017 12:40

I cant get past the 'ould Irish aunty Philomena' association, I'm afraid.

Genevieve is lovely.

Pemba · 08/12/2017 12:42

I am sorry, but to me too Philomena = old Irish lady.

Phillida?

Snap8TheCat · 08/12/2017 12:43

Ahh I love Ally Gator!! Grin

Elmo303 · 08/12/2017 13:05

Some alternatives that I thinksound good with Ottilie and your surname:

Vivienne
Mirabel
Romilly

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 08/12/2017 15:08

Blimey this is a difficult. No offense but it's really hard to think of a name that works with your surname. I've never heard of a Gator before!

I don't think you can have something ending in a vowel sound or y, as they flow into the surname and sound a bit like a piece of equipment (finellagator) or a reptile (arabellagator).

So I think something that ends in a consonant, like Meredith, or sounds like it ends in a consonant, like Josephine?

Can we just suggest new surnames for you instead? 😁
