Unusual names

Hi all,

I am due to get married in 6 months and we are planning to try for a baby in 3 months time and announce the news at our wedding Smile
I'm so excited for this new chapter of our lives and my DF and I would like to start thinking about names.
Boys and girls, we love unusual names but I also really love old traditional names. I also love unisex names. Open to all at the moment!
Could you all give us a hand? Any people that you have met throughout your lives with unusual names?
Thank you!

Here is a good place to get opinions on your choices. If you want to avoid names that are looked down on and may hinder you child, people here will tell you. Of course, no one agrees on everything. We went for a name that is instantly recognisable buy rarely used i.e. not 'out there'. Most people I speak to have known one person with this name at one point in their life but it is unlikely that there will be another one wth the same name in their class.

BikeRunSki · 03/12/2017 18:06

The only people i’ve ever met with names I have never seen or heard of otherwise are:

Boys - Eliezer

Girls - Jacinth

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 03/12/2017 18:06

You may need to manage your expectations a little. The likelihood of you conceiving straight away and being in a position to announce pregnancy at your wedding ( I assume you want to pass 12 w scan before announcing), though not impossible, is unlikely.

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 03/12/2017 18:07

Oh and I was at primary school with a Jonquil - never heard of another.

JollyGiraffe · 03/12/2017 18:10

I once met a Xaverie (female)

DearMrDilkington · 03/12/2017 18:15

I'd probably prefer to get pregnant after the wedding. You may end up with really bad sickness which would spoil the whole day, also means no drinking.

I love the name Viktor for a boy, pretty unusual too.

welshweasel · 03/12/2017 18:16

Why don’t you enjoy the wedding then start trying for a baby? If you are successful at getting pregnant in the first couple of months of trying (which statistically is unlikely) then you might end up spending your wedding day with your head down the toilet and being unable to stay awake past 7pm. The first trimester can be brutal, I certainly wouldn’t plan it like that!!

Sorry to rain on your parade OP but *

a) You'll have precisely 3 ovulation slots when you can get pregnant between starting to "try" and getting married, so don't count your chickens. Getting pregnant isn't always all that easy.

b) If you do fall pregnant you'll be at peak morning sickness time at your wedding.**

CatsCatsCats11 · 03/12/2017 18:29

This can't be real Hmm

BikeRunSki · 03/12/2017 18:31

This is true. If I had been meant to be getting married when I was 3 months pg, i’d have missed it because I was in hospital with hyperemisis.

noodlesandtomatoes · 03/12/2017 18:41

Don't do it! If you go end up pregnant, you could well be feeling utterly terrible at that point, not to mention the exhaustion!

Glitterandunicorns · 03/12/2017 18:44

OP, I have to echo what the previous posters have said about sickness. Even without that, the exhaustion of the first trimester (and sometimes after that!) is BRUTAL.

It took my husband and I a year to conceive our first child, and believe me, we were trying hard! I don't want to upset you, but it is absolutely not as easy for a lot of people as you seem to think it will be. I'd strongly recommend you wait to TTC until after your wedding, as if you aren't lucky enough to fall pregnant when you would like, it may harm your enjoyment of your wedding day and increase the pressure on yourselves unnecessarily.

AdrienneLouise · 03/12/2017 18:45

Thanks for all your extra 'advice' but I'd prefer help with just the names

Nancy & Seth are lovely names.

We like Otis and felix when we had our first but we had a girls Scarlett Ann

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/12/2017 19:18

Unusual names of people I have met, are Loveday and Stafford.

SparkleFizz · 03/12/2017 19:22

If you want a feel for which names are unusual right now, the office of national statistics publishes data annually on baby names given to babies in England and Wales. There’s the top 100 list, and a downloadable spreadsheet of all names given to at least 3 babies.
So a look through that might give you some ideas.

sooperdooper · 03/12/2017 19:27

It's a lovely plan but in all honesty just enjoy planning your wedding and accept you'll fall pregnant whenever you do, it's quite unrealistic to think you'll be pregnant and far enough gone to make a grand announcement at your wedding

Just enjoy one thing at a time and if it happens great but don't pin your hopes on it

flumpybear · 03/12/2017 19:31

Sorry op but sounds like you’ve got your hopes pinned on this announcement. Treat both separately, get married and get pregnant, don’t dream of announcing just concentrate on the job st hand. I’m sure you’ll be fine but don’t be too prescriptive!

Names: boys lucien and monro I love. Girls I love sorrel and saskia my DD is Tabitha which I’ve always loved

BackforGood · 03/12/2017 19:38

Agree with everyone else that this really isn't a good plan. In fact, it's completely daft.

Re 'really unusual' names, I've come across load through my work, but, for that reason, I can't really share the really unusual ones due to confidentiality - it would be pretty obvious it was 'them' with some of them. But really think hard about it, and try asking some people with unusual names if they like having their name commented on every single day of their lives.

It is easier for people to help you with names though, if you can say "I like X,Y , and Z - can anyone suggest similar names I might like?" There are thousands upon thousands of names out there, you need to narrow it down for us.

mrspatel77 · 03/12/2017 20:04

Good luck to you! Don't listen to all the negative Nancy's, if it's meant to happen then it will, if not keep trying! X

AdrienneLouise · 03/12/2017 20:06

I'm new here and I am so surprised at the number of busy bodies.
This will not be my first pregnancy, I know my body and my fertility and I know my boundaries. I am also having a super chilled out, intimate wedding and this is how myself and my DF want to do things. This is what is right for us and our day, our family and our announcement. So please, people keep your opinions to yourself on this matter. If this is not how you would do things then I respect that is how you feel. This however is our choice and what is right for our life.

To the person who said I need to give examples of names I like because there are thousands of names out there, I refer you back to my original post - tell me about people you have met with unusual names.

I find people very rude and judgemental on here! Can't wait for you to announce your pregnancy sweetie! Grin

Ponyboycurtis · 03/12/2017 20:11

Hey Op, brother and his wife had the same idea as you and she was 3mths pregnant when they married. They had a fairly unusual name for their child too, Eli, he was and is a fabulous kid.

Meeep · 03/12/2017 20:11

Boys - Afar, Gilidrel, Moosher.
Girls - Flewer, Delfa, Narnia.
