Not keen on it but if you really want to use it I'd put the full version on the birth certificate so he has the option of using it or maybe Bert/Bertie as a nn when he gets older, Gilby sounds quite babyish to me.

Scabbersley · 28/11/2017 15:06

Gilbert isn't great but gilby is horrendous.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 28/11/2017 15:08

I think it's twee but I think all -ie names are twee. It would be ok as a cute nickname for a baby or toddler.

Tinselistacky · 28/11/2017 15:16

Ds is Gabriel but gets Gilbert to take the piss.

Don't do it.

MammieBear · 28/11/2017 16:10

Gilbert lends its way to many a Nn most will come to naturally when you see him but you can use Bert/Bertie, Gill, Gilby, Giles

MonkeyJumping · 28/11/2017 16:11

Gilligan?

pipilangstrumpf · 28/11/2017 16:14

Nicknames evolve naturally. I'd call your ds Gilbert and not worry about nicknames.

Names don't need a nickname btw. DD's names is 3 syllables and rarely if ever gets shortened.

Mrsknackered · 28/11/2017 16:31

Gilson?

SilverySurfer · 28/11/2017 16:38

Like Gilbey Gin? Horrible.

PhuntSox · 28/11/2017 18:16

Gelert
Albert

Olivelor · 28/11/2017 18:30

Personally I feel Gilby/Gilbie are just not right for DS. But Gilbert alone sound fine. I think a nickname would come eventually and should not be worried about it too much at the moment.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 28/11/2017 19:47

How about Gill ?

shushpenfold · 28/11/2017 19:48

Gil.

Iwantallthesleep · 28/11/2017 19:53

I like Gilbert ! But then I also like Eugene which apparently (in the opinion of my sister) makes me a lunatic, so what do I know !?

BewareOfDragons · 28/11/2017 19:54

Gideon?

OllyBJolly · 28/11/2017 19:58

Gilbert is reasonably common where I'm from - often shortened to Gibby. I think Gilby is okay.

Iwantallthesleep · 28/11/2017 20:36

Oooh I like Gideon ^ too!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/11/2017 20:42

Giblet?

SuperBeagle · 28/11/2017 21:53

I like Gilbert.

Don't like Gilbie at all unless it's an abbreviation for Gilbert.

Iwantallthesleep I like Eugene too. Grin

pipilangstrumpf · 28/11/2017 22:27

Why does Gilbert need shortening?

AdalindSchade · 29/11/2017 01:08

Gilbie is SO BAD

Battleax · 29/11/2017 01:16

Oh jeez. Is "modern twist" the new "younique spelling". I don't think I can face this Sad

Battleax · 29/11/2017 01:21

I suppose there's the surname Gilbey, if you like surnames as forenames.

The two most famous Gilbeys are the actor and the (gin heir?) chap who had phone sex with Diana. I don't know where that leaves you.

Catinthecorner · 29/11/2017 01:42

There is a very cool guy on Buzzfeed called Eugene

thegreylady · 29/11/2017 08:45

Gil is lovely, very strong and a good nn for Gilbert.
