What are your thoughts on Emmett? Do you know any?

Yes, Emmett Till. Just too sad to use, it's a rare enough name that lots of people would have that association I think :(

Ontopofthesunset · 17/11/2017 11:40

It means ant as well as tourist. And is the first two syllables of emetic, something which makes you vomit. Can't get over the ant association myself.

ShotsFired · 17/11/2017 11:44

Like Back To The Future?

Mad doctor with crazy hair?

Or a labradoodle with try hard owners.

pigeondujour · 17/11/2017 12:05

Pretty ubiquitous in Ireland. It would make me think of a farmer, probably. Not that that's a bad thing.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 17/11/2017 12:22

Yes, I like it too.😄

He may end up with Lego hair.

Kirbs1979 · 17/11/2017 15:09

It's my oh's name. Will warn you no one can seem to spell it despite it only having 3 different letters in it. He gets Emit, Emet, Emmet or Emett.

reservoircats · 17/11/2017 15:28

I love it :) think it’s very masculine but still... kind, if that makes sense?

Mulch · 17/11/2017 15:40

I love it but oh vetoed it

PandaCat · 17/11/2017 16:19

I've never known one, sounds nice though.

pomegranita · 17/11/2017 16:29

It means “ant” in Cornish dialect and is used there in a derogatory fashion to describe tourists (grockle is a better known Devon equivalent).
Its also the name of a 14 year old African-American boy, Emmett Till, who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955 (as per the Bob Dylan song).
But the only Emmetts I have known in person have been Irish.

midsomermurderess · 17/11/2017 16:33

I like it but it does also make me think of the put-upon chap in Hyacinth Bucket.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 17/11/2017 16:35

Back to the Future was my first thought. Not in a bad way.

It's a nice name, and unusual, I've never met any.

BelafonteRavenclaw · 17/11/2017 16:37

I know one, he’s about 17 now. I’ve only taught 1 in my many years of teaching.

MrsCaecilius · 17/11/2017 18:45

Means ‘tourist’ in a bad way to me too. Although I think I’d prefer it as a name to Grockle...

buttwingsham · 17/11/2017 18:54

I know an Irish baby called Emmet. I like it.

daisypond · 17/11/2017 18:55

The first thing I thought of was the derogatory expression for tourist - an emmet.

SheGotOffThePlane · 17/11/2017 18:55

I love it but dh vetoed it for ds1. This was pre twilight days and I still bloody love it. Uncommon without being too out there.

dontcallmelen · 18/11/2017 19:43

I like it, have known a few fairly well known Irish name due in some part possibly to Robert Emmet an Irish patriot.

RavenWings · 18/11/2017 23:47

Love it, I would use it myself if I had a boy. Would have the Emmet variation as a mark of respect for Robert Emmet.

JaneJeffer · 19/11/2017 00:38

Don't know why my post was deleted Confused

pigeondujour · 19/11/2017 09:18

Hmm don't you?

eloisesparkle · 19/11/2017 10:34

Emmet is a fairly common name in Ireland.
Robert Emmet was an Irish patriot who rebelled against English rule in 1803 and was hanged.

JaneJeffer · 19/11/2017 13:50

No pigeon that's why I said it Hmm
