Finn or Louis?

Aliceinchunderland · 15/11/2017 22:23

Baby boy is due in a week and a bit and we can’t decide between these two names.
Surname will be a long-ish double barrel (neither of us will back down on the surname) so I like that they’re both short names.
I feel like Finn is more cool, but quite popular whereas Louis is more classic. I’m genuinely afraid that we might have to flip a coin after he’s born!

Apologies for double post. Thought the first one hadn't "taken" 😁

Brokenbiscuit · 16/11/2017 08:17

For clarity, to me Louis is pronounced Lou-ee, is not unisex, and is an entirely different name to both Lewis and Lois*

Exactly my thoughts.

I'm not mad keen on either, but would go for Louis out of the two. Finn is ok but I think it's a bit bland and boring, and I disagree with the suggestion that it won't date.

pipilangstrumpf · 16/11/2017 09:10

I know loads of Finns aged 5-15 and also think it’s past its popularity peak and may start to sound dated soon.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 16/11/2017 09:12

Love Louis.
It was on my list.
Finn is nice too. Love it with Fintan as the full name.
Congrats OP Grin

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 16/11/2017 09:14

Louis is NOT pronounced Lewis
NOR is it a girl's name.
It's a French boy's name people.
Sorry just had to say that. 😤

formerbabe · 16/11/2017 09:17

I agree that Finn will date. It is a nice name though.

Louis is more classic.

mum2be2boys · 16/11/2017 09:36

Both nice, but Finn is my favourite :-)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 16/11/2017 09:38

Louis is a great name !

ladybirdsaredotty · 16/11/2017 09:47

I'm biased but i LOVE Louis. I think it's the perfect mix of classic but not dull and sounds good at all ages, including teenage. And it's definitely a different name to Lois Grin

But Finn is nice, too! Good luck, OP!

MyBrilliantDisguise · 16/11/2017 10:56

How the hell can Louis, the name of a French king, be a Hollyoaks name?

And I agree with the others - Louis is not pronounced as Lewis and it's a male name. Some people do say Lewis, but they are saying it wrongly.

pipilangstrumpf · 16/11/2017 11:51

Yes, Louis is originally a French name. But in many countries the pronunciation has adapted to the local language. In Germany, Austria etc Louis is always pronounced with an s. As is the US city of St Louis.

thegreylady · 16/11/2017 12:46

We have a Finn and I love the name. There are many Finlay and Finleys but not so many who are Finn.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 16/11/2017 12:49

God, I hate Finn. Is it really seen as cool? Confused

ladybirdsaredotty · 16/11/2017 13:34

Iam I presume you didn't see that the poster above you has a Finn?!

Another poster made a similar post about my son's name on a thread when I had just announced my lovely newborn's name. I was a bit HmmSad

euanthesheepiloveyou · 16/11/2017 13:51

How rude, Iamagreyhound. Everyone will have a different definition of what's 'cool' but some people on here obviously have a Finn in the family. And for what it's worth, yes - I think it is cool. So neh.

pipilangstrumpf · 16/11/2017 13:54

Well, I dislike Finn and don’t find it cool. It’s a person from Finland 🇫🇮

Isn’t the whole point of these threads to offer opinions? The op wants to know what people think about Louis and Finn!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 16/11/2017 14:00

Sorry, but "having a Finn in the family" doesn't make it cool!

ladybirdsaredotty · 16/11/2017 14:00

Yes, but these are the OP's favourite 2 names, the baby is due soon. So I see that as different to someone listing 12 names months before one will be used and asking for opinions then. I'd focus more on positives of the other name, maybe. But also, THE POSTER ABOVE YOU HAS A FINN! It just seems really mean spirited to say you 'hate' the name of that poster's son!

I do get your point that this is a forum for opinions, and you have given yours. I'd just have filtered my opinion a bit in the circumstances.

Allthebestnamesareused · 16/11/2017 14:02

I'd go with Louis but prefer names that are timeless. I fear that Finn will be the Wayne of the future.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 16/11/2017 14:40

I fail to see how other people pronouncing names incorrectly is s reason not to go with a name you love!

I once met someone who called their daughter Niamh - but pronounced it Nigh-ee-Mah Hmm

Vango · 16/11/2017 14:56

I fear that Finn will be the Wayne of the future.

Finn/Fionn is an ancient Irish name. It may go out of fashion at some point but I don't think Wayne has the same provenance?

Finn was originally a celtic god. His name originates from the Celtic Vindos, giving the Welsh Gwyn (viz. the mythological figure Gwyn ap Nudd), and the Gaulish Vindonnus, and means "blond", "fair", "white", or "bright". That a widespread cult of Finn existed among european celts is reflected in continental place names derived from Finn or Vindos, such as Vienna, Windisch/Vindonissa, Vendresse and others.[4] The Scottish form of his name, Fingal /ˈfɪŋɡəl/, comes from a retelling of the legends in epic form by the 18th-century poet James McPherson.

Because it may get annoying if others constantly assume your name is pronounced differently than you pronounce it.

WhatKatyDidNotDo · 16/11/2017 16:27

Finn

Pidgythe2nd · 19/11/2017 07:04

What Vango said!

Finn is nothing like Wayne ffs.
Anyone with an ounce of intelligence will have also heard of Finn McCool....

Suits my fair, 1/2 Irish son to a tee.
